AC97 and MC97 - What are they?

I am not going to be sorry for asking this ;) , but what exactly are AC97 and MC97???

I understand that AC97 is to do with audio chipsets, and MC97 to do with modem chipsets, but if someone could give me some more details as to what they are/do/why we need them, that would further my understanding greatly.
