A power outage/surge fried the PSU in one of my PC's. I need a new psu, and this PC wll be getting upgraded. It will eventuall die just like it is now. It was a 250W max psu, so can I use a 300W max or do I have to use a 250W. Any help in finding a new psu and understanding what I need is greatly appreciated..

to be able to estimate your needs, we're gonna have to know just what equipment you have: type of processor, number of hard disks, amount of ram,... All the hardware you're currently running from the system, or that you know you're gonna add in the future.

Also: if the psu was damaged by a power surge, it is possible other parts of your pc were damaged as well. When you get the new psu, be sure to test them all before moving on.

Yes a 300W PSU will work fine or a 350W or a 400W but not a 150W.

Are you sure that it is the PSU that was fried? Tell us how you know.

Unless you are doing serious heavy duty work with multiple hard drives, high end graphics, etc, a 350W Off-The-Shelf PSU should suit you fine. Just go pick on up from a local computer store. Otherwise do some research online and find a good 400W one.

Since you didn't mention the make (Dell, Hp, etc.) of the computer, its age might dictate that you may need to do the proprietary thing and mortgage the farm...

Hopefully, it's of the generic sort and any PSU power plug will fit your motherboard's header...

Oh, and I second GW's question regarding, "How you know?"
