Notebook Reboots Automatically on Occasion and other issues

ASUS Notebook. I've had it for nearly two year. The screen is a little flickery sometimes but that's another issue I hope to solve by replacing (as I understand it) the wire between the screen and the input inside the screen which is wearing out. The screen itself is great it's just the backlight that seems to flicker when I move it but only then.

Second, I have an intermittent annoyance which caused a metal-sounding buzz or 'ring' when the speakers are turned up...especially when wearing speakers. I think the sound card may be right next to the CD drive or something and there might be an intermittent process that causes this...it's about five in a row...pause...then five again...I'm not precise on the number but its something like that.

Last issue, my Notebook has always every so often rebooted right as it starts up and then it has an error screen the second time around like pick a profile or last best conditions...I run a Registry Cleaner but it doesn't seem to update and it doesn't find anything lately. I run regular virus scans...I've been utterly clean and had this problem. I run Window XP Pro. I even clean out my system restore to get rid of lingering viruses and I use regular Adware. Well, it seems you have a handel on the first problem, as for the "Buzz/ring" in the speakers, is this new or has it always been that way?
As for the reboot, are you keeping up with your windows updates and security patches. Seems I saw something like this a while back but can't remember now :rolleyes:

I have had a "reboot" problem with my Compaq laptop, but it is extreamly rare so I don't bother with it. Hard to tell yet if it was more frequent when it was on Windows ME.

I tend to ignore the Windows Update sometimes. I'll go get the most recent one now and see if that helps.

The sound issue has been around since I first got the laptop. There's also a sped up similar sound when fast forwarding DVDs and a general reading kind of buzzing when I move the cursor around the ASUS DVD player window. It's a clone of PowerDVD I think but I wish I could get updates. When it plays cartoon or Anime DVDs there's alot of blur type stuff...like interlaced or something...movement of rapid frames cause the motion to blur.

Dang, sounds like you got a basicly bunk machine from the get-go. What kind of warrenty do you have? Has this machine ever been in for service on these problems?
I haven't taken a lot of laptops apart but I think they all have the sound on-board. Upgrading the sound card is out but maybe updating the drivers for it would help.
Can you remove the DVD prog and upgrade to an aftermarket prog?
Just thinking of some work arounds as I'm afraid repair might be undoable :(
