Every time I do a cold boot I get a halt and I must go into setup. After many times of this I noticed that it keeps identifying the wrong mghz. It is a PII 400. But on cold boot it shows PII 266. So I change it to 100 by 4 and then everything works fine. But what would keep it misreading? Thanks for any help
It sounds most likely that the battery on the motherboard is dead and you are losing the information stored in CMOS. Look for a thin round "watch" type battery.

Reid is right, about the only thing that can cause CMOS to lose settings is the battery, unless you are not saving changes when you exit. Even if the battery is only 4 months old, you might have gotten one that's been on the shelf for 2 years...I'd say replace it again. And check the date on the package.

If you had everything...Where would you put it?

Ok I replace battery, started it up and got the same F1 for setup, F2 load defaults. So I went into setup and it had the right mghz. So i exited and it started to load then got windows protection fault: windows\system\uspienum.vxd..........restart computer. After restart I get the Safe mode menu. I go ahead and load up to Normal. And then everything is fine. Ive went through the process a few times. Any ideas?

There is another thing that could cause you to lose your CMOS settings. The CMOS Discharge Jumper on your mobo. Make sure this jumper is set to "normal operation" or "disable CMOS discharge" (see your manual for exact location and proper setting).
Also check the HD...defrag/scandisk, and if you have the option for auto-detect for the drives...use it. Make sure the battery area is nice and clean, too, no corrosion or discoloration...
