View Full Version : resilient xp bug--how to get rid of?
03-28-2004, 03:34 AM
for some reason, whenever i open *any* text file, even creating a new one from the desktop (via right-click), the recently opened apps list in the start menu shows the shortcut "Virtual Key Info" (RPAINFO.TXT in system32), a textfile installed with classic compuserve's virtual key.
it's not harmful or anything, probably some sort of misassociation, but it has been slowly getting on my nerves and is now damn annoying! a registry search for this filename doesn't turn up anything, i even tried a little proggie called "ContextEdit" and i am out of ideas...help, anyone?

Simply get the Service packs and security updates from microsoft.
It might help resolve ur issue.
Or,all-times solution: Try reinstalling WinXP.
errrhh  I can't paste the forums logo

Have you tried simply setting the txt associations to notepad.
At its simplest RClick and choose "Open With" - Select "Choose Program" - browse to windows\notepad.exe (or select if from the list) but ensure you check the box "Always use the selected program to open ...".
For more formal editing of the file extensions' various functions, open, edit, etc, you would use the folder options under MyComputer/WindowsExplorer.
Could this be due to http://mail.ucbcba.edu.bo/converter/cbbalinux.dir/bin00054.bin
but have no idea how well Compuserve's virtual keys (http://www.compuserve.com/rpa/default.asp) function.

i've already tried un-associating and re-associating the TXT file type, but this bug is somewhere deeper, maybe in a cache or something?
i even tried uninstalling virtual key and deleting the RPAINFO.TXT file in particular, but that friggin' shortcut still keeps coming back to the start menu whenever i open any text file...
i've spent too many hours on this build, so it's not worth it to rebuild the os and all the apps all over again. who knows, if i am driven  enough, maybe i will.

Do you use Compuserve and do you have Virtual Key (RPA) installed on your computer??
Which Mail Client do you use (OE ??) and do you use Secure Password Identification?

yes, i have virtual key 3.2 along w/ cs classic installed. but i really use outlook (not express) for my email, and i don't think i have secure password enabled.
text files all open with notepad correctly, it's only on the start menu that this shortcut keeps reappearing, whenever i've opened any text file.

well, now i've reassociated TXT with WordPad, and at least the problem does go away with WordPad. but that doesn't really solve the problem, because i'm just not using notepad anymore...
...i also tried recreating the TXT file type from scratch, but the damn bug stuck with me STILL...AAARRRGGGHHH!
