when I attempt to bring up the registry menu with the keys,the latter show up on my screen but disappear almost instantanously
so I can't access the keys.
I have xp home edition.thanks

Sounds like possible infection...there are quite a few malware apps that will close or prohibit RegEdit from even running.

Do the standard scans...AV/AT/AS (anti-viru/anti-trojan/anti-spyware), follow with a HijackThis (http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/) log...(links are in my sig).

PS: Try to run msconfig and ctrl-alt-del to bring up the TAskManager...if the same thing happens you are definitely infected....sounds like possibly one of the spybot variants.

did ctl alt del-task manager window shows up
ran norton anti virus-no infection
ran spybot-no problems
msconfig-did not run it cause don't know how-if it's the same procedure as running regedit then it does not work-did not show

Yes, looks like you have a variant of the spybot worm (not related to Spybot S&D).

I ran Trend Micro's house call and the later reported 1 infected file
c:\windows\system32\cctaskmgr
using a little program called tuneup utilities,i was able to access my registry.searching inthere i found 4 items for the above file.
I would like to submit those findings to you but I can't copy or paste
anything in my reply to you.is there another way I can get this info to you before I do anything.thanks
