I just wanted to announce that after installing and configuring Linux Mandrake 8.1, I'm now cruising the net Windows-free. May I also say that Linux and the Konqueror browser are much smoother than my old win 98/ IE 5.0.

Wish I knew some one around here that had that so I could see if I like it.
is it easy to mess with.Eventually I think I might put it on one of these machines But I might wait till I build a new full tower or server I want a real custom machine with a nice Emron paint job with air brushed insignia and power hungry. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

COOL DOG,
What GUI do you use? I have Redhat 6.0 that I need to put on something. That was the first thing I noticed about Linux, It just seemed SOOOO MUCH smoother. Redhat comes with 2 different GUIs (sorry, can't remember what they are called at the moment).
Where did you get Konqueror? I was going to try Opera with it.

Red Hat comes with KDE and Gnome desktops, Mandrake comes with those and about a dozen other less popular ones. I'm using KDE. Mandrake 8.1 also comes with about five different web browsers, and Konqueror is but one of them. You are correct about Linux being smoother, in my opinion. Microsoft had better watch its back as the improvements in this system are advancing by leaps and bounds and the gap is closing rapidly. (Closed completely in my case.)
I'm astonied at the amount of software that comes with this thing. Two spreadsheets, two word processors, several desktops, a compiler, the Gimp graphics program, just to name a few. I've set up everything including an external modem and a printer and I've yet to load a driver other than automated. Everything has worked first time.
If this sounds good to anybody, you can go to linuxcentral.com (http://www.linuxcentral.com) where they sell Mandrake 8.1 for about five bucks last I checked.

You can download it here.
ftp://sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch/mirror/mandrake/iso/
With DSL it took about 40 minutes for each file. Dialup, you should just order it.
This is the mainpage, click on downloads, you can get it from different countries. You want the iso. http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/

So this Mandrake Linux gets away from having to use the command line altogether?

Yes. I've yet to need any prompt commands, but as with any OS, It's best to get to know them, as I'm betting that I won't get away with not using them forever.
