View Full Version : Monitor not responding

Just installed a new CD Writer, connecting it as a Secondary Slave after the orginal CD Rom.
However, when reconnected the PC, the monitor did not respond, it only stays in standby mode.
All lights/drives working on CPU - just the monitor not responding to the CPU. Sounds simple enough, but it's got me stumped.
Can someone help.

Sounds like you might have bumped your video card loose when you were inside the box. Try re-seating it in the slot (sometimes it takes several tries, especially with AGP cards) and be sure the monitor cable is connected securely to the card. Disconnect and reconnect to be sure, and
also check the monitor cable for bent pins.
Do you hear the POST beep when you start up?
If still no video, post back and we'll keep trying to help you.

Download my diagnostic flowcharts from here
www.erniek.eclipse.co.uk/downloads/sylvanderdiags.zip
and print them.
Begin on the START UP chart.
You are probably not getting the single short beep that indicates successful completion of the Power-on Self-test [POST] nor any other beeps.
If this is so, then you have NO POST.
When POST does not complete, then the next step in the startup process, which is the enabling of the video card, does not take place. Therefore the PC just sits there with no image display on the monitor, because no signal is being sent to it.
Sometimes the monitor is designed to inform you when no signal is being received.
Follow the chart appropriately and you may be taken to the NO POST chart.
I'd guess there's no need to disconnect ALL those things mentioned in the instructions. Only disconnect the CD-RW drive.
If the PC will now POST, then you've found the culprit.
So then you need to figure out what it is about the connection of the CD-RW drive that causes the BIOS to detect a "fatal error" and halt the POST.
SOME POINTS
1. What make are the CD drives?
2. I think you should connect the new CD-RW as Secondary Master and the CD-ROM as Secondary Slave.
3. Are ALL your drives set, in the BIOS Setup, to dynamically "Auto" detect?

Thank you to all who responded. PROBLEM SOLVED!
Firstly I checked all the plugs, and pins etc. I found that a little plug with 4 wires connecting to the vga... port was lose. After a few jiggles it went back in.
Problem Solved - Thanks all.
