Are there gamers here who are running on XP? If so, what do you think of it? I'm thinking of upgrading my win 98 but after hearing of XP's amazing performance but I've also heard that it has some trouble with certain games. Particularly ones using the unreal engine. Does XP run games that are not compatible with Win NT/W2K? If so, then how does the performance measure up to Win 98se? I'd like to upgrade but I'm afraid that if I do, half my stuff won't work. Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

all i can tell you at this time is to check out bluenews.com and stomp.com, these are both gaming news sites/forums where people ask the same thing. also try a google search, my brother is a big gamer and online gamer and wants to try the XP upgrade.
P.S. from what we have heard play most games from Win95 onwards.

Go to the Guru3d (http://www.guru3d.com) website; it's dedicated to video cards and gamers-specifically look in the forum.
I've not tried XP in gaming yet, though i do run a dual boot with 98/2000, the biggest problem i've seen is in 2000 since it's coded in C++ and a lot of games, older ones especially, were written for the older C code for W98. Hence there is usually some tweaking to be done in order for them to properly run in W2000. One of XP's vaunted new characteristics is the ability to run a " virtual " mode that would fool an older game into thinking it was running on a W95/98 machine. This is actually very similar to the old virtual 8086 emulation we used to have to run in order to get DOS programs to work when faster Pentuim CPU's began to debute; the hardware was literally too fast for the software instruction sets.
I would wait at least another year, until there have been some service packs released and gaming issues that pop up may be resolved-unless you're an addict for punishment. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks for your output guys. I think I will wait until XP's been tried and tested before getting it. I can tolerate the occasional Win 98 crash every now and then.

Agree with iisbob; Guru3d is an excellent site for gaming questions/hardware/tweaks.
There's been A LOT of discussion in there lately about Windows XP and running games, so that'll help you see the types of problems/good things many are experiencing.

I just upgraded to XP from ME. I have not had any problems. I had all of my hardware XP drivers on a CD. Once XP was loaded I used the CD to install the correct drivers. I have not tried any older games. I guess the oldest game I tried was Unreal Tournment.
