I have a portable hard drive that connects through USB and I was wondering if I installed WinXP on it, if I would be able to boot to that hard drive and run winxp on that one instead the of the internal hard drive. How would I get the pc to recognize that and boot off it? would a boot floppy work?

Suggest first checking your BIOS setup to see whether and, if so, what USB devices can be booted-from. This is more a function of the mobo than of the OS, as such.

Boot floppy is a nice idea but don't know for sure. You would need to copy boot.ini, ntldr and ntdetect.com onto an xp formatted floppy and then add and modify a new line in boot.ini for booting to the removable drive. Just not sure how you would write the line correctly in boot.ini for a removable drive
