Hello there dear gurus...

I encountered a funny problem today.
I am running NT Server 4.0 and I have 4 new users coming in today. In User Manager for domains, I added the users, with the option "users will be prompted to change their password when they log in".

Now, when the users log on to their Win98 machines, they enter the default password, and true enough they are prompted to change their passwords.
A window pops up that contains 3 text fields -
1) "Old Password" (automatically filled with *********),
2) "New Password" (where the user is to enter her own new password) and
3) "Confirm New Password" (where the user simply has to re-enter the password she typed in the previous box)
All the user had to do was to type in accordingly, and their passwords would've been changed successfully.

All except one user, that is. This user had a strange problem. He entered the default password, saw the pop up with 3 text fields, but the "Old Password" field is NOT filled with asterisks, unlike the others. It was empty. So I typed in there the default password which is "password", then enters his new password in the "New Password" field, then again in the "Confirm New Password" field.
Then the machine prompts me that the old password is incorrect. I can swear my life that the default password I used in the server IS "password". I repeated the process but keep getting the same problem.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Seems a bit weird - perhaps someone with more experience of this could post otherwise, but as they are a new user, wouldn't the simplest thing to do be delete the user and then re-insert the entry for them?

Just one more thought occurred - is this user on a particular station that the others don't use? is the keyboard the same as everyone elses?

I recently bought a 'Goldtouch' keyboard ( a very fancy ergonomic gizmo) which promptly caused problems when trying to log on to windows (XP)
When using it, I was constantly told that the password I used was incorrect (it wasn't) but it was due to the fact that the Goldtouch is purely a Unicode keyboard, and Windows uses ASCII as a log-in coding system; so although I was hitting the same keys as normal, the actual code to the system was different. (most keyboards can emulate either, but will use ASCII until you are at least logged on to windows)

Quickest way to eliminate the keyboard as the problem would be to switch it with one from a workstation where the password was successfully changed.

Whooaa... before we go off track here... the problem is NOT about any keyboards.

It wasn't the most likely of causes, just a thought. Did you manage to get any further with the problem?

I'm still stuck at where I was.

Any idea? It seems strange...

A couple of shots in the dark- including a couple of simple things (please excuse me even asking them - they may seem basic!)

Has the user been placed in a group that has extended privileges and requires a different password for that group?
Is the user actually trying to log onto the domain in question, rather than locally?
have you tried unchecking the 'require password change', logging the user in then out to see if the log-in process works at all?
Tried changing the default password for this user from admin mode?

Did the user have a password on the Windows 98 computer? If it does, your basic/startup password on NT will have to match that....

there is a chance in doing like ..log in as administrator..
please delete that account ..and create new account in that name..set polices what ever u want and tell u the user to login from another machine and to reset the password

Heyy there all you good helpful people...

I tried all that was advised to me, but couldn't solve the issue.

In the end I brought the user to my server, opened up "User Manager for Domains", opened up his account, then asked him to type in his new password. Then he went back to his PC and treid logging in with the new password and, of course, it worked.

But I felt lousy having to resort to such a measure.

You guys at this site are the best!
