Is double memory better than single memory and if so why?

Assuming you are talking about RAM, do you mean two sticks of RAM versus one when they add up to the same amount of RAM???

Or dual channel DDR, or DDR as oppose to single data rate RAM?

Yes both
single channel DDR,verses dual-channel DDR
I know about rules that aply to dual
It's for a gaming rig consisting of a Pentium 4, 2.8 GIG Hiper-threading Technology. On a mother board MSI 865PE NEO2-LS (HT Ready).
Would like to get the best performance and most stability, especially for multitasking, and other programs running, surfing the net all at the same time.

two sticks of dual channel ddr should be the way to go if your mobo/processor combination can make use of it.
Intel systems seem to make better use of this feature (though someone may come and correct me here:D ) as their fsb speeds are set up to take advantage of it.
Multitasking really depends on the amount of ram more than anything - shove enough ram in any reasonable system and multitasking is a lot smoother.

Going with the dual-channel DDR memory boards.
I guess about 2x512 Thank you
