I a helping my friend on upgrading his software issues but I am running into a problem. I dont know if his cd-rom is not able to read CD-r's or windows 98 is not reading the CD. I used my computer that has XP to burn apps and upgrades for him. Is this a 98 issue or ahis CD-ROM? his cd rom is a dvd player so I figured it was ok of reading CD-R's

Can his DVD-drive read regular CD-Rom's (commercial software disks)?
Are you burning CD-R disks or CD-RW disks with your apps and upgrades?

There normal CD-R's and yes he can read the commercial disks.

Try the disk(s) in a different computer or in a different drive. Can it be read in the computer that burned it?
I would try to burn the CD-R's with regular burning software (I'm not very familiar with XP's abilities to burn CD-R's).
I don't think this is an OS problem. More likely a CD-burner/drive problem.
By the way, nice rig. Did you build it yourself?

Yea we put the CD into another comp and it worked but it had xp but funny thing is I have another friend that I used the same disk and it worked fine and he has 98 too. I used Nero 5 to burn it never had a problem but his comp. I really think its his CD-Rom.
I was trying to install sandra but its asking me to install the MDAC 2.5 first. Need to use it to ID the CD-ROM cause device manager doesnt say anything on it.
Yeah I built it my self took me awhile but most of it came from reading diffrenet forums and asking questions. Thanks

Yes, it sounds like your friend's CD-drive has a problem. Luckily, those drives are pretty inexpensive and easy to replace.
