For some time now I have been adding registry entries to the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl keys so that by just entering a "shorcut" letter or letters followed by the search term into IE's Address bar - the brower opens the search page for that search engine using the relevant search term.

In my travels, I have just come across http://searchy.protecus.de/en/ which allows you to download a whole range of these registry edits. Being naturally cautious with any downloads I saved them to disk and read them with notepad first. Any that I tried have the basic format of

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\dic]

... which conforms to what I have been manually adding to my registry over the past year or so.

After running the one above, I then just entered dic aardvark to look up a dictionary definition of, in this case, aardvark (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=aardvark)

I think its pretty

If anyone's worried about using them directly just use notepad to "open with" the downloaded .reg file first.

You can always later navigate to the registy entry and change the shortcut letter to one of your choice.

When you've finished you can always export and save the whole of the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl key before reinstalling etc so that you can quickly reinstate all your customised searches at a later stage.

PS The one second from bottom that replaces the default MSN search with Google's might just be the best one there!!

Paul, thanks for the link though I don't use IE for regular browsing. I am sure that you are aware of the sophisticated way mozilla and firefox does the same, One of the many enhancements that keep me glued to firefox. One can select from morethan 1000 search engines with a single click, once the plugins are installed. You can search from the pulldown menu to the right of the address bar. The search results open in a new tab. The snapshot {shows my current selection) will be more graspable I hope.
