If I restart my system (warm boot) my keyboard doesn't work at all, yet it works fine if I switch it off and start it up again. Why does this happen?

My system uses an AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz proc. on an K7T 266 PRO (apologies if thats the wrong way round!) board with 256 Mb DDR memory.

I dont know a great deal about computer technical stuff so Id apreciate it if you could explain it in as simple terms as poss.

Thanks in advance

Hello stu and welcome,

First question: what operating system (Win98, ME etc)?

How old is this machine, and is it under warranty?

What kind of keyboard, P/S2 or USB?

Has it always done this or is it a recent problem?

Sorry ! The operating system is windows ME, the machine is about 2 months old and still under warranty.

The keyboard is of P/S 2 connection type.

It is a recent problem, I became aware of it shortly after I had installed new software (cable providers internet connection pack and couple of Symantec progs) although the system reports no confilcts of any type.

Hope this helps

Option A: Ok I assume that you can find a restore point to before you installed the software (using ME's restore feature)?

If so, I would roll back to it and reinstall each program, one at a time with some checking in between.

Option B: Unistall what you have added and see if the problem disappears, then reinstall each one and see which one cause the problem.

Also check Device manager (in Safe Mode <f8> while booting and select Safe Mode from the menu) to see if you have any "ghost drivers" or devices that appear more than once.

If neither seems to help the call the tech support and exercise that warranty....but be warned they may want you to completely restore your machine to the factory condition first (with the restore disk....), so back up anything you want to save (data and any downloaded files especially programs that you want (in the downloaded not installed form))
