Hey Gang,

Got the upgrade bug. Currently looking at an Asus K8V Deluxe and an A64 3000+.

Need opinions on whether or not I can use a gig of HyperX PC2700 I have with the above mentioned components. I realize that I would need PC3200 with the setup, but the PC2700 is guaranteed to run at a maximum of 434Mhz.

Aside from the risks of overclocking the memory, will I have problems trying to run this RAM with the new setup?

Opinions, concerns, observations welcomed.

TIA.

Cheers.

Looks fine to me. What else are you putting in your new rig?

Thanks, Saphalline.

Just planning on upgrading the guts for now...plan to use my existing case, components, etc.

I'm running an 80Gb Maxtor ATA133 8mb cache, 5700 Ultra 128mb, Audigy2 Platinum, the usual optical drives, 2.1 Microworks, Sennheiser HD570s, modded Compucase mid-tower with red cathodes, red LED fans, etc. That's about it. You can see the case, code named Dumbo, below:

Scroll down a bit, you'll see it.

Thanks again for the assurance.

I see you've decided to jump on the 64-bit bandwagon eh.;) Nice system, btw could you teach me how to mod cases? Pretty please?:D

Thanks, guys.

Deagle: Yep, just built an A64 system for a buddy of mine at work...was so impressed with it that I immediately fell in love with the speed. Especially the Gigabit ethernet. Wow, she's fast, eh.

I agree that modding is not difficult, but coming up with an original idea might be.

I really have to get that webpage updated. The wife wanted a purple case, so I bought a purple Chieftec Dragon...had to cut those cats out again! What a pain. The silver case with the beige drives is now all silver...I cheated with that...bought silver faceplate drives instead of stealthing them myself.

I prolly have the only elephant modded case around, but I'm sure I've seen cases with cat cutouts before. Only reason I did those two cases is to add to our collections.

Aside from possibly those two cases, the rest of what I've done is pretty plain jane compared to some of them I've seen out there. But, I'm always on the lookout for an enclosure to stick a working system in...hope to find something in the swap meet this year at the Iola car show. Who knows, maybe someday my case will be in the back of MaximumPC. Hey, it could happen. :D

Cheers.

Not exactly a mod but I came across THIS (http://www.aerocool.com.tw/aerocool-files-v3/lubic/kits/4480airplane.htm) in my varied internet travels and thought it was pretty freaky. :p

Hey Gang,

Man, I finally got around to upgrading the system.

No problems whatsoever running that HyperX PC2700 at 400mhz. Installed an OS, ran benchies, etc., all without so much as a hiccup. I held my breath when I hit the power button for the first time, but as Saphalline suggested, no problems.

Also upgraded to a Seagate 80Gb SATA harddrive. The system is screamingly fast now, eh. Very pleased with the A64 3000+'s performance.

Hey, great news! Keep it up and someday you'll get to run 64-bit code on that thing! :p

I'm waiting for Socket 939 to come out before I get on the 64-bit bandwagon - which is another way of saying that I can't afford it right now.
