What are the pros and cons of running Win2000? It would be run on Abit KT7A-RAID, 512 pc133, extra 20G to experiment with. I have TRIOS HD selector and can thus leave existing system undisturbed. I already have Win2K but am looking for a reason to put the time into upgrade(?). I just need a reason to switch. So motivate me!

Pro:
2K -- stability, NTFS, security, more actual control over things..
98 -- compatability, ease of use (maybe)...

Con:
2k -- primarily for business, lack of compatability
98 -- instability, no real security for a multi user environment, less control over the inner workings...

Why not use them both? I use both of them and dual boot. I agree with mjc.

I have no security issues, as this is a home pc, and will not be networking because I have no need. So then it boils down to stability only? Is there much of a learning curve? It has taken me a year to get where I am with win98, and don't want to start all over without good reason. thanks!

Unless you use the advanced features, it is almost identical to using 98...a dual-boot is a good idea as long as you have the space. That way you get the compatibility of 98 when you need it, but you can use 2000 for its rock solid reliability.

Honestly, most things work with 2000...the biggest problems I've seen are with modems and scanners. And, of course, gaming is better under 98...

I am still learning 98SE, but put 2000 PRO on also did not do upgrade. I now learn 2000 at my pace. I have the option at boot up which system I want to use. It is like 7up try it you might like it. If you decide to go that way post back and we will help.

Thanks folks. I'll check out my drivers and give it a go. Any advice re clean install that is different from 98, other than four boot disks (whats up with that?) let me know.
Oh yeah, and what size partition would you suggest to fdisk? I have Partition Magic 4.0 but I'm not sure that it will run from within WIN2K. I have 98 and all progs on 4G as we don't game, music, or photo. Does 2K need more elbo room?
Thanks for the (& from the) dope!

I think 2 gig is enough. Partition magic should do it all. I went fat 32, for reasons of my own. You should not lose any data with PM. When you install do not let winn 2000 upgrade, full install. My partition magic runs in 2000, I think I have 6. I put mine on a seperate hard drive so if one hard drive goes out I still have o/s, and computer. You will have to load printer, scanner, and all hardware into 2000.
