View Full Version : PC freezes when accessing my websites
Vic 970
11-25-2001, 10:26 AM
Went to my website today www.revi.co.uk (http://www.revi.co.uk) & the comp froze, tried it several times, did the same thing, & had to re-boot the machine each time, it also happens on my other sites, but not on any others that I visit. This site has been up for about 2 years now and I have never had this problem before.
Page partially loads, but no sound & refuses to complete loading, I've had times when I couldn't access it due to heavy traffic but never had it freeze before.
Is it the site or my pc? Like I say I can access other sites no problem.

Vic, it seems to load ok, mind you im not a million hops away (the other side of crewe). One thing that wories me is you say
I've had times when I couldn't access it due to heavy traffic but never had it freeze before.
Heavy traffic would have to mean a lot of hits at once. Check with you ISP,(FSNET!)if they have problems, however looking at your source code I noticed you have used Publisher 97 to write your html. As a programme it makes html in a way that the pages are massive so this may be one problem then again it might not. Just looked at your own page "The Inventor" and for the amount of text thats on the page the source code is massive. It has loads of tables mentioned of which non are visable on the page, this might be another cause. Suggest you check out your html with an online checker such as http://www.netmechanic.com/toolbox/html-code.htm, it might find a problem that is causing the slowdown.

No problem here either, Vic. Might give it a couple of days before worrying though. Might be server problem...we were "down" all Thanksgiving day, but since we have two puters, we knew it wasn't us.
LOVE the definition of upgrade. Have always liked your sig..and approve heartily of new addition. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Vic,
What program are you using for music on your machine...the browser plug-in for playing midi music may have "broke"...that would explain why it hangs without music...you can try updating it, or if you are using QT from Apple and are running IE 5.5 and up, go to the Apple site and look for a fix...since IE 5.5 and later don't properly support the pluggin.....

Hi Vic
Your site froze on me (I'm using ME and IE 5.5) !! I went HomePage then NextPage then Knots and was busy studying a bowline http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif when the music stopped and my pc "froze" but was rebootable using CTL/ALT/DEL Twice.
I'll leave this to the Gurus to sort out hehe. Good Luck. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Having an awful job to post this!!
Thanks all for the replies,
I'm figuring now that the problem may be 2 fold, let me fill in the history...,
a week last Friday I did a full backup on my PC (all was working fine)
over the weekend I installed a SoundBlaster Sound card, plus the 'bundled' software, & IE6. & PcCillin (McGafee already installed) & updated both A/Vs
over the week I did some ping tests on my machine, & reported same to my ISP as I have always felt that I was not getting the best from my connestion on this pc or my previous ones, although my download speeds have improved since installing download express.
(I have frequently visited Pitstop & got good results exept for my internet connection, which I found to be set at 46,000 & reset it to 115 which improved the results, though Pitstop still reported a problem)
Thursday & Friday I did nothing to the machine & it was working fine, Saturday morning I did a backup to save all the new settings and progs, (over-riding the old backup)
Saturday evening (pc having been in use all day) I found difficulty in accessing particularly my own sites, but since then have found that all web pages are now slower to load.
I have been to Pitstop & done A/V test, (none found) also done a full test of the system, & now get a report that Drive E (Program partition,) access is slower than expected, (yet other partitions C w98: D data: F downloads etc. were ok) with a suggestion that A/V progs may slow it down. I turned off both A/Vs & tried again, several times; same result.
Now with Pauls result, feel that my website might be overly 'heavy' as scroatbag reported, but that I still have a prob on my machine !
I feel at the moment maybe IE. but how to check?

Seems like the probs at this end,I've just found that IE6 seems to have defaulted, ie: settings have jumped back to 'new connection' & connect at 46,??? so I'm working my way through the settings.

Vic, tried your site again. I am using IE 6 on win98. Your music is stopping after 45 seconds or so but my pc is not locking out.. Something spooky has just happened..looking at the knots page, music stopped so went to check it (as i am writing this at the same time - multi tasking at its best) and its gone back to your homepage!!!! Weird!!! I thing there is some bug in your code or something. If you want to borrow a copy of Hotmetal Pro or some sort to redo your website I would be more than happy to drop a copy in for you. Is this your business or home addy on your homepage. As I have alredy said only live the other side of Crewe.. Up to you Vic.

Aparently I did not let it run long enough so I went back and tried it again i let th first page run until music stoped so went to next page and did the same run about 30sec. music stopped again. so tried to close out stone ded in the water and no bildge pump locked up hard got blue screen with this--Wdmaud(06)+00002BCF Error:0028:FF19F01F
had a HeLLLLLLL of a time getting un locked now I'm going to check my CTL-ALT-DEL, some thing did not look right in there when i was trying to unlock and shut down. I'll post back with my findings.
Alright went back to look now normal should have copyied down when i was froze I do remember one that was in there and it was a dll32 there was a couple other dlls there to but i am not going to try that again!! LOL Are you sure that site has no Virus were just not picking up on or the makings of one that is not finished?? Thats what it acts like to me one some body tried and is to stupid to finish.:O I think I would re-do the site or shut it down.

Hi, I'm back again at least for the moment. Had a hell of a job to access anything yesterday, & have now found that something has upset my browser settings. I have just set up Freserve (payg) but can't set up BT (surftime) as I can't find the settings (I've just dropped them a line.
Seems like there's a big prob on the site though, & all the other sites that I built with publisher were the same when I checked them, (haven't done it tonight though as I've only just got back on line)
Checked my pc again at pitstop its now reporting 'unusually low performance on drives C & E' so thats gone worse it was only 'E' before,
I am getting a bit of a rumble from my hard drive (only 6 months old) but I'm wondering if its going to die on me !
{b}scroatbag[/b]the site is an attempt to get my invention off the ground, I have been throwing money at it for 5 years, but getting nowhere, been ripped off a couple of times (and avoided it several times more) but I'm still trying.
thanks for your offer, I was wondering whether to start learning Front Page ( have never used it) but if you've got something better/easier I would be obliged to try.
Meanwhile I seem to have 2 probs, one with the pc & one with the site.
Is it possible that the sites have corrupted (or been corrupted) strange that they have been up a couple of years without any probs.
Would it be worth uploading the sites again. (as soon as I am satisfied with the pc )?
As I said before, I have 2 A/V's on the machine (both up to date) & have checked it several times at Pitstop as well, never any virus's detected.

I noticed that the counter script is missing a type attribute, specifically this "script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"....didn't notice other scripting oranything else that could be considered "fancy", not getting any scripting errors......and other htan a bunch of do-nothing tables, useles gifs (ones that are blanks), and missing alt attributes & summaries for the above (all trade marks of a PnP html editor...by the way don't feel bad some are even worse than this.....), I don't see anything else that could really be a problem, unless one of the sound files has gone missing......just spent about 10 minutes there and no problems.....

I have tried your site again (since doing a clean install of ME and IE 5.5) with exactly the same result. Music stops/freezes/CTL-ALT-DEL/Cursor still frozen so cannot end task/CTL-ALT-DEL/Normal reboot.
Could it be related to the Music?? I have nothing fancy - just on-board sound.

forgot to mention that the music is not on a loop, so it only sounds for a short while then it stops.
I,ve just been to one of the smaller sites, and same thing, froze on me, had to re-boot.
I just tried to access this site by clicking on a link on the e-mail notification and pc froze !!! tried several (to this site) all did the same. but other links in my e-mail ok.
Can't get my head around this at all !!! seem to be accessing other sites ok.
By the way, I'm really sorry that you've had the problems of freeze ups etc. & thanks for the kind remarks (should have said this before, but I was busy banging the k/b against the desk !!) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif

Vic, as I saids at the start your code may be a problem, to many table references and no tables. I do think you need to start again as you may have some how uploaded some kind of virus??? Not sure of this but you never know what Publisher is doing with HTML. With regards to Frontpage, I would say forget it, the programmes that are out there are better than that, I do have it but its a bit frustrating. With regard to you invention, as will all "British" invemntors keep at it, remember the cyclone hoover and the wind up radio and the jet engine (and if my memory serves me well the computer) have all been invented by "Brits"... I will give you a bell on your website number on friday and see if I can help you out as im off for the day....

WARNING:::: I think I've got a virus
Have picked up a virus from an attachment; SEARCHURL.MP3.pif
my A/V has apparently blocked some from going out in the following atttachments...,
Humor.MP3.scr
SETUP.DOC.scr
New_Napster_Site.MP3.pif
to some addresses which I don't know, to one that I sent a test e-mail to about a year ago (which now doesn't exist) none of which were in my address book.
what does concern me is that I sent an e-mail to scroatbag (before discovering this, and one which was blocked was to sea_69 etc.
which had been blocked, but I don't know if any others have gone out
Before sorting mine I'm hoping to prevent passing it on, so if you can contact any of these I would be obliged.

Haven't had time to fully investigate yet, but the activity seems to be limited to freezing the PC when I click on a link (and of course to reproducing)
one of the links blocked is www.revi.co.uk but I don't know if any has got through. The problem that I had with the site though started before I recieved the attachment. The attachment was sent to me by someone who requested information (3 or 4 months ago) & contacted me through a link on my site.
As I said I have done several virus checks (have just been to Pitstop again) but no virus's found. Can't see that it can be anything else though.

quite right scroatbagit seems that viruses usually come from people you know or trust,
I have downloaded 1st page (in readiness to re-do my website) but am still recieving viruses at the moment, & still having proms with my connection. In the interim I re-uploaded my webpages to my site, to see if it would clear whatever prob that there was there, and afterwards the 'wizard' tried to publish again, stating "you previously published this page to....
'%?(loads of symbals)%' : which of course I never have. I still can't access any of my web pages (PC freezes) & I now can't upload to any of my sites as I get a message 'cannot access server'
weird or what ?
Am still looking up stuff on this virus thing, which takes precedance at the moment.

On that symantec page it tells you how to remove the virus. It doesn't look very difficult. I suggest deleting your cache and temp files. Does your website cause problems when you download it to your computer and view it from your hard drive?

Which FTP program are using to upload/download to your site - and have you considered using another one?
I found CuteFTP (http://www.cuteftp.com/products/cuteftp/index.shtml) great and really easy to use (when I had it on Free-Trial) and although I am still trying-out other Freeware at the moment I will probably go back and buy it.
Best wishes (I can still get into your website so the problem must still be "probably" at your end) - this must be driving you nuts - "...There is a Tide in the affairs of Man..." - but don't go potty. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The sites were built in Publisher & uploaded via the 'Web Wizard', the beauty of it at the time was that you didn't need to know any html (was taken care of by 'the wizard') & when you uploaded to the site it over wrote anything that was there, it also kept all the upload details under an easy ref.
ie: you could edit the site offline, click on upload & a few minutes later job was complete.
It was I feel the easiest way of doing it at the time and they have been up for at least a couple of years now, I haven't got around to trying anything else, but I will now, I've just downloaded 1st page.

strange that these probs started when the virus started yet it was a couple of days before I recieved the first e-mail with the attachment, but the first one that I recieved was from someone that had e-mailed me from a link on my site, can't figure it, a bit like the chicken & the egg !
I feel that the site is somehow involved/affected. & I have 4 or 5 others whiich are also affected !!!

I misunderstood you Vic!?! LOL http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/redface.gif
When you said you downloaded 1st Page and then uploaded your site I didn't realise 1st Page was HTML software - I thought it was Page 1 of your website!!! and then it got stuck. Sorry bout that - but if "1st Page" doesn't include an FTP component then you may still need additional software.
1st page does include an ftp component, but you may need to download it separately and I think it is a pretty decent html editor...especialy since the price is right, and NO adware...

seem to remember it as a seperate download but havn't d/l it yet.
further prob found in that I can't empty my cache, have been using spider for quite a while now, but it just won't do it now tried several times and it goes through the process, but deletes NOTHING, & I've just been reading this http://xforce.iss.net/static/5566.php
there is 49 Kb in index.dat, do you think that there may be something active in there? A/V still coming up clean!!

Can anyone tell me the size of the 'index.dat' file when its empty ?
Spider can no longer clear it, I've deleted spider & d/l'd a new copy (in case it was corrupt) but no difference. I deleted 'index.dat' in DOS & it came back at 32 Kb, but I now get an illegal operation message from spider.
Also I did a scan on Ad Aware which found 4 files, but after several attempts would not delete them until I ran Deep Scan.
spider & index.dat though remains the same.

I Keep threatening a format, but I've been reading more about this virus & it appears that you don't even have to open the attachment, (& I've had it 3 times now,) also there's the prob with my sites, which I don't know whether its connected or not.
& Whilst the machine is still running reasonable well, I'd like to find a few more answers before the big 'F' including tightening up the loopholes.
