I plan on buying and installing a new harddrive this weekend and I never done this before. Can someone walk me through this. I'm buying a 120 Gb harddrive and I'm installing Windows Xp onto it. I've done it before with someone else, but this time I'll be solo. So any advice will be appreciated.

Will you be adding the drive to an existing one or are you replacing it (ie taking out the old one). Is it an ide or a sata drive?

Also: some info on your system would be handy: number of drives present, number of ide/sata-channels,...

Putting in hard drives is relatively easy, shouldn't be much trouble, we'll get trough it ;)

I need to replace my hard drive. I don't remember how many IDE channels there is, I think theres 2 of them. I have a DVD-RW & CD-RW that are on the same IDE channel. I know installing them are relatively easy, but my fear is with installing the operating system. I'm installing XP from the back-up disks(6) I got from Hewlett Packard.

It shouldn't be too difficult... Do you have another computer with web access you can use if you get stuck??

Also, when you post a thread, the title "I need help!" is one of the least likely to get you help because it doesn't give a clue about the issue. In this case something like: "Help to install new hard drive" would probably get you more help than you can handle....

If you have a floppy drive on this box I would download the harddrive diagnostics and have them ready to run right after you attach the drive...

Thanks everyone, I did it and it was easy. I installed the 120 gb harddrive with an IDE controller without a hitch. Then I put in the cd that came with the hard drive and rebooted the computer. After that, I installed the XP(8 CD's) operating system that I got from HP. Everything went like clock work.
