View Full Version : CAT5 LAN not working properly

I have a CAT5 LAN that uses a Sohoware 100Mbps switch to connect 3 PC's. All use XP Home. In the past we used Netzero to provide internet hookup, with any one of the PC's logging on and the other two also having acces thru the logged on PC. This simple setup has always been reliable and seems to do everything we've needed...til now.

We decided that the 33Kbaud connection throught Netzero was just too slow for our growing needs (teenagers...).

So we have gotten DSL service. My PC is the residental gateway machine, with the DSL modem connected directly to it (and the phone line). The setup was no challenge and it works on my PC just fine. BUT! It will not provide internet service to the other 2 PC's. The INTRANET (home network) still functions as always.

The DSL folks barely speak english...10+ hours on the phone with them and it still is worthless for Internet connection for the other 2 PC's.

Here's more details:
TCP\IP set to autoconfigure for both NIC's.
IPConfig says - NET (home NIC) is 169 254 167 43
Subnet - 255 255 0 0
IPConfig says - DSL (DSL NIC) is 192 168 1 64
Subnet - 255 255 0 0
Default gateway - 192 168 0 1

What are you using to try and share the connection? ICS?

The second NIC in the PC with the DSL attached while most likely need to have an IP statically configured.

What are the network configurations for all three PCs.

I'm back with time for a more detailed explanation.

The NIC connected to the DSL you can leave as is. If you plan to use ICS then you will need to configure the NIC connected to the internal LAN on PC 1 with a static address of 192.168.0.1. It's not strictly necessary, since enabling ICS should automatically configure it with that IP.

Then you can set the other two PC's to obtain addresses dynamically and it should then work. It is also possible to use static addresses on the other PCs so long as they are in the range of 192.168.0.* and they are configured with a DNS server address of 192.168.0.1.

THIS (http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/showthread.php?t=4520) should provide info on how to enable ICS.

Three industrious teenages should be able to scrape together the nucks to get a router. Once the router is in hand it will take 15 minutes to get it setup. That way any pc can get on line no matter what the status of the other pc's.

"THAT" solved the problem!

Thanks:)
