View Full Version : Strange messages from Microsoft?

I am encountering two messages that may or may not be related. I would like your opinions. I am running Win2K Pro on a Dell Inspiron 8000 notebook with a PIII 1GB CPU and 512MB of RAM.

When I first boot the computer, I get the following message:
"Rundll
Error loading UDConn.dll
The specified module could not be found."

A Google search of the error message returned responses suggesting that this is part of spyware, so I ran Spybot-Search and Destroy and allowed it to get rid of everything it found. Still get the message on bootup, but the computer seems to run just fine without the UDConn.dll module, whatever that might be.

The second message is far more annoying, occurs only when I am using IE and is intermittent. The message purports to be from Microsoft and states as follows:

"Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost."

It then has a box check-marked "Restart MS IE" which it allows you to uncheck. The message continues as follows:

"Please tell Microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve Microsoft Internet Explorer. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous. To see what data this error report contains, click here." When you click on the hyperlink, you get all sorts of technical information that goes on forever! I am unable to copy and paste any part of the message and/or the technical data provided. You are then given the opportunity to select "Send Error Report" or "Don't Send." It makes no difference which option you choose, you are immediately disconnected from the website. However, if you select neither option, but simply drag the dialog box to another area of the screen, you are allowed to continue with whatever you have been doing for as long as you want. There does not seem to be a legitimate problem! This is what first aroused my suspicion that the message might not be from Microsoft.

I have no idea whether the two messages are related, but I have run Hijack This with results that I will have to post in a separate post, since this one is already too long! :-) (To Be Continued....)

Thanks,

Scarlett

I highlighted in red (in the immediately preceding post) the only entry that I have found that pertains to the Rundll message; however, I cannot interpret its meaning. I do know that there is an icon on my desktop that is identified as "utildadesus-htm" but I have no idea how it got there or what it is supposed to do!

Any information or assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

Howdy,

Please close all open windows and your browser, run HJT and mark/fix:

I could find very little info on these and I suspect they are malware. I recommend fixing them and you can restore if needed later:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [utilidadesus-htm] RunDll32 UDConn.dll,RunAsIcon utilidadesus
O16 - DPF: {12E5E9D9-4366-45D9-BA41-D0BCD55AD8CF} (UDConnect Class) - http://17.sharedsource.org/html/Nrs..._1.0.0.1ie.cab?

You also have MyWebSearch installed and it installs malware even though parts of it are not themselves malware. I recommend getting rid of it and using the Google toolbar (which you already have) or some other that is known to be safe. If you opt to remove it, you will need to fix these and use Add/Remove Programs to remove it:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\1.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL

This one is a registration reminder that is not needed and eats resources and many believe it is also spyware. I recommend fixing it:

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

If you can't find MyWebSearch in Add/Remove Programs, you can remove this folder:

C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe

Once you complete these options, please reboot, run HJT and post a fresh log.....

This happens frequently when crapware is uninstalled. It removes the file, but not the registry key that loads it.

A quick google search confirms my suscpicions that the DLL in question is the remnant of a spyware dialer program. What you should also do is install spyware blaster to prevent these problems. Once I installed Spyware blaster, my Spybot scans 100% clean.

I did everything you suggested, Budfred, and although it didn't seem that I was able to remove the MyWebSearch toolbar, when I rebooted, it was gone! Also, I didn't get that Rundll message. :) I feel a lot better right now thanks to your help. Many thanks! I hope that whatever I just did took care of the Microsoft warning as well. I had never heard of "Hijack This" until I ran across it in one of the posts here. Perhaps there is information somewhere that explains exactly what its purpose is? I will try a Google search, but for now, I am extremely pleased. The only thing I miss about MyWebSearch is Smiley Central--I liked those little critters! Is there an alternative?

I have Spybot-Search and Destroy, but I don't know what Spyware Blaster is, Classicsoftware. Where do I find it, and is it difficult to install and configure?

Are there any other programs I should be aware of and perhaps install in order to prevent these occurrences in the future?

Thanks again for your help. I actually came here looking for the solution to a Win98 software/hardware problem that is driving me crazy, but I will save that for another time. :) I think I have taken up enough space for the time being. Which reminds me....here is my new log, and please let me know if you see anything else suspicious:

Your log looks pretty good, but I would fix this just in case. The O16 items get restored when you revisit the site in question, so if it is legit it won't be a problem to fix it:

O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://a1540.g.akamai.net/7/1540/52...meInstaller.exe

You can also get SpywareBlaster from my links... When you activate it, it sets a Killbit for the spyware specified which will then protect against that spyware being installed on your system. Except for updating it occasionally, you don't need to do anything more and it doesn't take any resources... Very cool program.

You could also install IE-Spyads which set higher protections in IE and warns you if you try to visit a bad site.

You need to make sure you have a good firewall and keep your antivirus up to date. Also, make sure you have the latest critical updates from Windows since they block a number of very nasty infestions... To learn more about HJT, you can click on the link in my sig, it goes to a page that talks about it and provides links to learn more....

I to have had this internet explorer thing, eventually I re-installed everything, but it has come back.

many times logs are posted, but I have not yet seen any advise as to what to put on the #ignore' list. it seems if this list list be configured properly, then everything elsa could be 'fixed' whenever the items appeared ?

this is my latest log, any advice appreciated.

Vic 970,

The "ignore list" tells HJT what to ignore when you do a scan. We generally would rather people don't use that so that we can see as much as possible when you run HJT and catch the bad guys. The closest you can get to an ignore list like you are talking about is to use SpywareBlaster, IE-Spyads, a firewall, and a good updated AV to protect against infection....

If you want feedback on your HJT log, please start a separate thread... It is too confusing to deal with 2 logs in the same thread....

Okay, Budfred, I fixed the remaining item as you suggested, and I have read the information on HijackThis. I will also download and install Spyware Blaster and Spyad IE.

I have my LAN behind a Linksys router which provides a hardware firewall of sorts; however, I have been told that I also need a software firewall. Zone Alarm has been suggested. Do you have a better recommendation?

I am currently using Symantec Systemworks with Norton's Antivirus running in the background and getting automatic updates. I run a full system scan for viruses every Friday night. Do you think I should also add Symantec's Internet Security?

Why do I get the feeling that my computer is going to be so "secure" that it might not let me even use it? :)

Thanks again for all the help!

Scarlett

It is more likely to be a problem if it isn't secure, as your recent experience demonstrates. I run most of the things I mentioned and have no trouble with malware most of the time. On Thursday this week at work I searched for song lyrics and ended up spending the next 8 hours of work time fixing the mess. I got hit by drive by malware in droves. My work computer has Norton AV, a network firewall and Win2K that hasn't been updated since SP2. I am not even supposed to install any other security products, but I will probably put in SpywareBlaster and IE-Spyads anyway so I don't have to go through this again. My IT department decided the way to solve the problem was to pay Dell to take my computer, wipe the hard drive and re-image it... No way I want that to happen....

I would avoid Norton's Internet Security. NAV is already bloated and weirdly unreliable at times, addding those other things might bog down your system. In addition to ZoneAlarm, Kerio and Sygate are available free and are good. I use Sygate which is between ZA and Kerio in terms of difficulty. Kerio is harder to set up, but runs lean and has the reputation as the best free firewall..... And yes, you need a software firewall. The hardware firewall is nice and protects against things attacking from outside, but not from inside....

I use Zone Alarm, the free version and it is very easy to use. I would sugest you get a software firewall as well as your router.

Thanks, guys! I will be getting one of the software firewalls ASAP. I think that Zone Alarm is probably the one I will install, but I am going to take a look at the other two that Bud mentioned as well. If I remember correctly, Kerio also makes WinRoute, and that was the "router" I used before I bought the Linksys.

I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate the good help. So far, I have not been interrupted even once by that Microsoft message, so whatever you had me do must have fixed it as well as the Rundll problem.

I will be back next week with my other problem--so far, no one has been able to come up with a solution, and it will be interesting to see what your suggestions will be. I will be getting ready for finals next week, so it may be the week after before I can post the problem.

Many thanks, once again!

Scarlett
