I just thought it was one of those machines that spits out money... The last one I visited didn't spit out anything..... It just chewed on my card and swallowed it. :(
However, since this is in the LAN Forum, here is one of MANY links you can find for an explanation of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (http://www.sharpened.net/glossary/definition.php?atm) through a little searching. :p
And from FTT's link:

And from Whyzmans Link:

ATM is asynchronous transfer mode which is a switching technology that has a fixed cell length of 53 bits ( it breaks data up into smaller pieces (53 bits) to send them ) it does not use IP to route rather it is a layer 2 technology. ATM creates a fixed channel, or route, between two points whenever data transfer begins. This differs from TCP/IP, in which messages are divided into packets and each packet can take a different route from source to destination.
usualy you will see this at the ISP level the technology would sit between the SONET network and ISDN it sends digital data ( some smaller ISPs have a ATM backbone no SONET). speeds range from 155Mb to 10Gbps. This is the best I can do in simple english its just another way to pass data apposed to ethernet or SONET. goto cisco web site you will find all you would ever want to know about it.

Just a sec... are you confused as to what an ATM Machine is, or how it works?
