I created a 'Tutorial' in WordPad, and inserted some Cut & Pasted JPEG screenshot images.
Although the total file-size of the JPEGS was only 255Kb, I was surprised that the completed, and saved, WordPad file had jumped to 4.1Mb.
Is this normal, and is there a way of reducing the size?

Hard to know what's going on but I just tried one small 10kb jpeg in wordpad and its file size became 2MB. The same file in Word was 32kb.

Why this happens eludes me and couldnt find a reason on Google.

If you would like a good cheap (as in free) word processor then go grab Open Office (http://www.openoffice.org/)

Hi Paul: That's strange - I thought I posted this reply earlier but, for some reason, it did't appear.

I do have Corel WordPerfect as my main word-processing program, but inserted images are nowhere near as clear as those imported into WordPad.

Talking of file sizes; a few years back I made the mistake of cutting & pasting some webpage text directly into WordPerfect, without first going through Notpad to remove the formatting. Although I adjusted the font and text size, some invisible formatting remained, which pushed up the document size tremendously. An copy document containing identical
text was smalled by quite a few megabytes.

Another thought would be to create the tutorial as one or a number of linked html pages; with clean html this should produce possibly the smallest pages of all.

I did some tests.

A WordPad file with text-only is 11Kb.
With Icons inserted as 'icons only' is 50Kb.
With the icons opened as images and inserted, it is 138Kb.
File size for images alone is 10.5Kb

What does this tell us - although interesting - I'm still none the wiser. (laugh)
