I've picked up a Compaq professional workstation 5000 for 30 bucks, I plan on installing Windows 2000 pro and using it as a small fileserver/internet connection sharing machine once I get my two Pentium II overdrive's in it. I've got a bunch of questions I need answered. First off, what type of memory can be used in this machine? The Total Hardware 99 website says EDO and SDRAM is supported, but that seems to be the only place that says that. Everything else I've found says this machine takes 168 pin EDO DIMM's. Another question, does it take 3.3v or 5.0v EDO DIMM's? Doesn't seem to be a lot of info out there about this. This machine is dual cpu capable, it has one PPro in it now, if I want to upgrade, I need a VRM, which leads to my next question. What type of VRM do I need? I've managed to find one website (http://logicbox.zoovy.com/product/COM289725001) that says that a VRM out of a Compaq Proliant 5500 will work in the workstation 5000, can anyone confirm this? I'm sure there's a few of these workstation 5000's out there that are running dual cpu's and still being used, so I'm hoping someone can answer these questions for me.

does it take 3.3v or 5.0v EDO DIMM's?As far as I know, 168-pin EDO DIMM's only came in the 5V flavor. SDRAM was the new RAM technology that worked with the lower 3.3V setting (with reduced power consumption and heat dissipation).

As for the rest of your questions, Compaq would be the people to ask. They made the workstation and they're the only ones who know for sure (proprietary cr@p).

Hmmm.. Ok, could you tell me if this http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3475704172 is compatible with the Workstation 5000?

I found a PDF article on Compaq/HP site. Your Compaq was first introduced in 1996. It uses EDO memory because the 440FX chipset only supported EDO and Fast-Page Mode memories and EDO was the better choice between those two.
