Hi there

When I right click on the desktop or in a folder I don't get the 'new' menu item. As in new folder, text doc, winzip archive etc. The 'File' drop down menu won't give me this either. Where has it gone?

I've attached a picture.

Win 98SE & XP pro dual boot (it works fine in XP but not in 98SE), AMD XP2400, ECS K7S5A motherboard.

I cannot see how to make a new folder. If I need a new folder I have to go into XP and navigate to the Win98 desktop or wherever I need a new folder.

Sorry if I'm being stupid.

Cheers

The New option is only available in a few locations and programs. I don't believe it is usually available on the Desktop in Win98, but it may be in Windows Explorer. You can also create new folders in Explorer and through My Computer....

Thanks for this.

I tried right clicking on a win98 pc here at work and the 'new' option was there. And I am totally sure that I used to be able to do this on my PC at home until recently.

Odd :)

There's a 'new' option on my 98 box at the DeskTop.

Here's (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;180257) the MSKB answer for that problem and a discussion (http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/157297.html) about the problem and a free custom Program (http://camtech2000.net/Pages/Useful.html) workaround if the prior doesn't work for you.

With the program you'd still be missing many other optional commands so I would go with the MSKB article.

Please let us know how you do or if you need help.

Nice links FTT and a couple of handy utilities; I always like little smart programs like those.
--start copy--
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\Con textMenuHandlers\New]
@="{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}"
--end copy--
You could save the green text from Notepad as a .reg file and then open it to reset the value to its normal default if you want to.
