Hi everyone,

I am running a wired network through a D-Link router on a desktop and a laptop both of which are running Windows XP. After doing the latest series of updates from Windows update my computers are no longer speaking to one another!

The computers share the internet and that still works. However, when I try to access files from one machine on another I am told that I do not have permissions to access those files. I am the only administrator on this system. Can anybody give me some ideas on what I can do to rectify this problem?

Thanks so much in advance,

Deadshot

XP Home or Pro?
If your two XP machines were sharing files successfully before the updates, then I would check the settings.
If you're using a firewall, I would check and make sure the IP is not being blocked.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found out the problem, however. Last week I was having a problem with a really long boot time and one of the suggestions was to use www.blackviper.com to turn off settings that hog resources. It seems that some of the suggestions in the "safe mode" turned off the ability for the computers to share files. I turned back on some of the settings and everything is working fine again.

Lesson learned is don't turn stuff off that you don't know what it does!:)

Thanks everyone,

Glad to know you solved your problem. However if your interested to find out what is actually running in your start up list you could try looking at the huge listHERE (http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php)

Yes, the blackviper advice should always be tempered with good sense. When I strip down XP, I usually have a couple of things running that his "safe" configuration recommends turning off. I approach the edges of lean operation carefully, you just might need that one service sometime. Of course getting advice for lean operation from the forums via HJT from knowledgeable persons here is helpful too.
