Hi Y'all,
To whom it may concern. Rootkits (http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/answerstips/story/0,24330,2001019,00.html)

My general rule of thumb: don't click on unidentified links....
Could you explain please....

Bud,
I looked at it,
the article is from Tech TV, media explanation of how hackers get control of PCs.

Hi Budfred-
It's just a TechTV article about:How to defend yourself from backdoor programs used by hackers. (Actually excerpts from a book).
I hear you about unidentified links, but hovering your Mouse over the Link or checking it's properties shows that it's a link to TechTV....A place I go all the time and usually trust. (Including links they post at the site. :)
(Edit) Beat me to it PrntRhd...Strange, that's never happened before.
:p

Actually, hovering my mouse over it doesn't do anything, but a Right click and check of Properties reveals TechTV/Screensavers and those type of links worry me... TechTV is okay, but a lot of links to things like screensavers are bogus.... My paranoia about such things recently went up a couple of notches after trying to look at some lyrics...;) I also just like it when people post enough info to know if the link is worth checking out....

I understand you being cautious after your recent experience, but "The Screensavers" is just the name of a Regular show on TechTV- (One of my favorites in fact).......Not a link to actual "screensavers".
No biggie, not very interesting reading anyway. :D
Edit...(With all due respect to wiltrot of course)
;)
(Edit#2) I take that back wiltrot...Some of it actually is pretty interesting. Like the "Backdoor" the Colonel discovered. :p

Did anybody watch the video clip?
I was most interested in the tool called VICE that's used to find rootkits and trojans. Didn't mean too scare you Budfred.
There's a link to the author's site.

I did. Very interesting. I wonder if it has anything to do with that access .exe balony? Might explain some of what's going on.

Yes....Very interesting indeed. (The Video that is-didn't see that link first time around)
When they showed the task manager Steve, it made me think of that Screenshot we saw in a post here the other day.
Sorry wiltrot, when I said "not very interesting", I was wrong!
Been reading a little more too....Yes, you could download "vice" and see if there are any "rootkits" installed on your Computer...Don't think I'll go there though...with the possibility of false positives, it would just give me something else to worry about. :p
Pretty darn scary how the rootkit can be completely invisible though.
His site is actually pretty cool.
Obviously, he's appeared on the Screensavers...Must have missed that episode. :(
(Edit) BTW...Did you guys know the PCGuide was mentioned in Leo Laporte's Book some time ago? (Leo is one of the Show's hosts, for those of you that didn't know or don't get it in your area)
Anyway, thanks for the link wiltrot ;)

Ok, watched the video. Another seperate scan to detect possibility of problems.

Hehe...Just what we need huh? Yet another "Scan" to check for "infestations".
It just occurred to me that eventually the entire time we spend on our Computers will be spent checking for problems.
Several Hours later, we'll sit back with our hands behind our heads and our feet up....And this great sigh of relief will come over us that everything is "clean".
Then, we'll quickly turn it off without ever having used it for anything worthwhile.
But hey, at least we will know it's sitting there nice and clean. :D

Cleaning your pc then surfing is akin to washing the dog and then letting him out to dig and roll around in the mud...
Vice versa isn't so bad...
