ARGH!

Having trouble booting my system running Windows XP Pro. If I try to boot my system it will auto-reboot over and over. I tried to boot from my XP install cd but I get the blue screen of death whenever I try to use the install cd to recover my hard drive. The error on the blue screen is STOP 0x00000024 (0x001902F8 etc...). It also says there is a ntfs.sys error.

I did a google search on STOP 0x00000024 but all the suggested fixes require me to run scandisk or chkdsk on my hard drive, which I cant get to because my system will not start up .

Is there any solution to this that doesnt involve buying a new hard drive?

Start MS TechNet (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_swhw.asp)
Check your HDD cabling
Is your AV compatable with WIN XP?

Final question, are you running NTFS or FAT32?

-I tried replacing my hard drive cable...same problem persists.
-Yes, my AV is compatable with XP.
-Not really sure about the NTFS or FAT32. I want to say NTFS, because the STOP error mentioned something about ntfs.sys. Is there another way to tell what my system uses?

I have noticed that when my system starts the auto-reboot process, a red light flashes on my mobo near the pci slots. Does this indicate a mobo problem?

Easy to find what file system.
Left click My computer.

Right click what ever your primary drive you want to check["C"] and left click properties. It will then show which file system.

The 0x00000024 stop error and the fact that you cant boot to the installation CD must make it likely there is a hardware problem with possible bad sectors on your hdd. I would grab the hdd makers diagnostic utility and check out the hdd with it from a boot floppy.

If the disk is physically intact and you still cannot get into either safe mode or boot to the installation CD you could try wiping the HDD and clean installing - but if you have valuable data on the drive I would suggest trying to recovery it earlier rather than later on.

The idea of running chkdsk is obviously to try and correct any correctable disk errors. It is possible to do this from a BartPE (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) bootable CD if you want to attempt this and still have not gained any access to your system.

for a list of WInXP stop messages go to
http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

Error 24 (which is what you have) indicates either a problem with NTFS.sys which indicates damage to the disk or file system (which others have said). Boot into safe mode (if possible) and try running defrag and then scandisk

Thanks to everyone who replied.

There seems to be no way I can get Windows to boot so that I can run any diagnostics. At this point I think I will just wipe the hdd and do a clean install of XP. All the data on my drive can be replaced without too much trouble. I mainly use my system to play games anyway :D.

Don't wipe the hard disk. It appears to be bad. Get the diagnostics from teh hard drive manufacturers web site as suggested by Paul and run them. It will test the PC independent of the BIOS and the OS. If oit fails, you may have warranty options from the maker of the comouter or the maker of the hard drive.......

If the drive is bad, even if the install works you will get this error again and will have wated a load of time.

Just as a General rule if the Chicken-head-eating Geek gives you advice, you should probably follow it....

I agree, before you format/reinstall, get the manufacturer's diagnostics software and check the drive out.

You can disable the auto reboot in XP by doing the following.

Right click on my computer and go to properties. Now choose ADVANCED and look for Startup and Recovery and choose Settings here. Now DE-select auto-restart. This means that when you get a BSD windows will show the details of what is actually going on (Similar to what happens in 9x) . You would have to manually re-boot after this.

Also when (if you have error reporting set) it offers to send a report to MS have a look at the report it wants to send. Near the bottom of the report (usually in the bottom 3-4 lines) you should find the details of what is actually causing the problem. After you have read the report you can either choose to send it to MS or cancel.

The diagnostics wont do me any good, as my cd burner is broken and I wouldnt have any way to use them on my computer. So I went ahead and re-installed. I ran scandisk as soon as I could and it said the drive was OK. Right now I'm in the middle of downloading 53 megs of windows updates . I'll definitely download those diagnostic tools from the manufacturer and make a cd of them as soon as I get a new cd burner.

Thanks to all who replied with advice :D

The diagnostic tools for a HDD usually fit on a floppy disk, FYI.

Could you describe how you reinstalled since you couldnt boot to windows or to your CD?

I tried to boot from my XP install cd but I get the blue screen of death

as my cd burner is broken

Just curious.

Also burn the MS updates/patches to disk for future requirements. This willsave downloading again.

I fixed it by putting the winxp pro CD in and booting the disk to windows setup and i opened the recovery by hitting "R" and typing in the following commands "cshdsk" i think and "Fixboot" i said my boot was corrupt and it fix it now it booted no blue screen.
