Hi I'm building a p4 3.4gz. The mobo has a 875 chipset ddr 400. 9600 radeon 128mb video. Anyway, Just wondering any opinions on the hardrive. Looking at the seagate SATA 120GB 7200rpm 8.5 seek rate, or a 36GB Maxtor 15000 rpm seek rate 3.2. Of course the price of Maxtor is a bit more for less drive space. Just wondering what you guys would suggest. ;)

Western Digital. I have had less failure with WD drives than the other two,, That's jsut my experience.....

I agree with classic on the Western Digital.

Look at this drive (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-160&depa=0). The Maxtor drive would be SCSI and you would require a SCSI interface card as well (unless the motherboard you are buying is the Gigabyte 8KNNXP). With an 875P motherboard, the above linked SATA drive will be supported onboard.

Or consider two of these (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-200&depa=0) and you can set up a nice RAID array.

As I've Mentioned in other threads......Another vote for Western Digital here. :D

I think I've also mentioned that I've had more failures with one of the "ol' favorites", (namely Maxtor), that any other Drive.
(Maybe just my luck? Doubt it at this point)

WD also has a nice Warranty. ;)

(I suppose I should mention that I also have a Seagate SCSI that I like a lot, and has been very reliable.....Man! Why do I say things like that?) :p

I just love my pair of WD Raptors - and as Jabar pointed out, the Guarantee is another consideration.

Hello gertiee
Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums.

As stated above the 36.7 Maxtor drive is an enterprise class Ultra 320 SCSI drive made for mission critical multi drive SCSI RAID(that is the reason for the steep price). To use that drive you will also need a 32 bit PCI to SCSI card so add another $150 to the price. (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=16-103-127&depa=1)

I also vote for http://images10.newegg.com/brandimage/brand1306.gif I have 2 WD1200JD SATA drives (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-151&depa=1) in my system and my 12 year old daughter has 2 WD1000JB PATA drives in her system.

If you want fast drives go for the WD Raptor series drives they are enterprise class 10,000 RPM SATA drives 4.5ms seek time with 5-year warranty and 1.2 million hours MTBF.

You ask: "should I get the Seagate or the Maxtor?"

And we all answer: "Go with the Western Digital" :p :D
