Have recently moved to a new apt complex. I pluged in my wireless network card and waalahh.. I have internet.. I know that some one around me is stupid, and I have zonealarm running to protect me, however Should I be worried,? about security issues, or anything.. cheers!

Forget the security, what about scruples?

Stealing, freeloading, borrowing without permission...a rose by any other name would smell as...

O Rose, thou art sick! The invisible worm....:p :D

Maybe you've walked straight into a trap.

Joking aside, give this a bit more consideration.

Yeah I know I didnt walk into a trap, this person that has this connection is stupid. They have no idea what they are doing. I know this is wrong but i can just play dumb if i get caught.

getting caught is the worry...

I'm afraid you will be on your own here regarding your security.

You can play dumb, but why act that way. Just because yiu didn't break in and splice his cable line to get free cable tv, does not mean you are not a thief.

You know it's wrong, or why would you have to play dumb. Nobody on this forum will tell you it's ok to do what you are doing. And to answer the question in your post title.

IF YOU KNOW IT'S WRONG, DON'T DO IT!!

If you want to be really ethical and a good neighbor, approach the person who has the wireless connection and let him/her know what is happening and what can be done to set up protections... You might even be able to make a deal to use the access in exchange for helping this person maintain protection.....:)

PrntRhd
04-26-2004, 09:54 PM
Are you next to a Starbucks or something?
If not a public access point it is stealing, unethical too.

bassman
04-27-2004, 10:26 AM
Budfred's suggestion is RIGHT ON!!
As I was reading thru this, that is exactly what I was thinking. If this person knew how vulnerable they were, they would be overjoyed at your honesty and courtesy and would probably grant you access to their connection for a time. Even if this is something you don't necessarily want at home, it would be nice to have a broadband (is it broadband?) connection when you do want it (for free).

Honesty and courtesy is an enlightening thing. Help this person and you will be rewarded;)

Welcome to the Guide.

thanks guys. and yes it is broad band.. I am going to have a fun time finding this person, because there are a number of people it could be. But it will be worth it., cheers!:)

do what you where going to do and forget all these people who would do the "right thing". if you think people who are rich and even government are going about with that ideology then your wrong. everyone is looking out for their best interest and if something benefits you with out hurting others then fine do it. the cable company isn’t loosing any money at all, and if you think they put cable rates up because of people stealing cable then your wrong they will have high prices no matter what. if bush can kill innocent people over borders and out of the american eyes then do you think you stealing cable makes you a bad person. get yourself into perspective and if you start acting like these blind americano's then you may as well start worrying about how to spend your money on more useless stuff you really dont need but are programmed to buy!

Yeah well, that was a good point. However I have been locked out of the computer, the mexicans below me figured it out. Plus I get freaking 8 hours of interneting daily at work. I dont want, or need internet when i get home. I use my computer for movies and games. Thanks,

Ahh, righteous and narcissistically entitled in amoral voice in the same post... So, Unregistered, are you one of those people that believe it is okay to shoplift because the fatcats who own the stores have more than they need and you are entitled to your fair share as well??? The logic of such rationalizations is so convoluted that it would make most of us dizzy just trying to follow it. In this case, letting a neighbor run with an unsecured broadband wireless connection so that you can steal bandwidth because Bush is waging an unjust war... quite a leap of illogic... Since you seem to be interested in the doctrine of personal greed over personal responsibility, I suggest you think about what all those unsecured sites out that are doing. They are the places that the malware makers use to launch their attacks, whether that be SPAM or something even more malicious. The more you let those sites remain unsecured, the more you are part of the problem in addtion to being a victim of it.... This is not a pirate board, so I suspect your views will not be very popular around here, but then, maybe you are just visiting to disrupt things before you move along to harass others.....

Trust no one.

Shaft'em before they shaft you.

Do unto others, then split.

What a great world if all followed such a philosophy. I would laugh, but it's too depressing.

that was a good point. However I have been locked out of the computer, the mexicans below me figured it out. Plus I get freaking 8 hours of interneting daily at work

Seems fastray has all the right reasons for not doing it anyway. Oh well, guess I'm just a "bleeding heart", soft and unrealistic. The "mexican" comment was interesting also.

Depressing.

i'm very impressed with your comments and the terms you decided to you use. I find it very entertaining to listen to people such as yourself who have nothing much really to say but use terminology most people don’t; just to make it sound like you have a point. tell you the truth i don’t steal from anyone in any way. but if i moved into an apart with an illegal cable hook up, i'm not the type that would be pondering to myself what the moral thing would be to do. and the point about bush since you weren’t able to get it from my last response was my view about "bigger things happening" in this world than some one getting free cable. people like you have to get your mind off the small things and see the big picture, and i wont clarify that for you any further for the reason you might stuck in you "box" so much that reason can't reach an individual such as yourself. and don’t be preaching to me about morality or anything for that fact, and another thing you might find me confrontational but hey people who have different views are always seen that way, welcome to a democratic country! or are you from the US, lol

The heat is on.

Consider the heat now officially "off". Otherwise I bring out the fire hose, and you won't like it.

(People will always disagree about this issue. I am sure the regulars here know how I feel about it personally. But arguing about this accomplishes nothing; if someone wants to steal Internet service they are going to do it, and if they publicly post saying "I am going to steal this, nyea nyea" they are doing so only to provoke a reaction.)

THis has nothing to do with you.. This is just an issue that has been resolved, and people are expressing there views even though its done. I think that both of thoses guys are just expressing theirselves and should be able to do so.. so bring the fire hose! haha. kidding. im done here. haha.

That's about the only thing you've said so far that I'm inclined to agree with.

ah freedom to voice ones opinion is always frowned upon with you people who are so used to be told what to do. I love it how everyone in America has the mentality of “FREEDOM AT AN PRICE OR COST” yet some one like myself can be condemned for voicing my thoughts. Is that freedom?

lol i love it

ps you should do something about
"I had a life once...Now I have a computer and a modem"
thats not a life!

Dear Fastray:

Before IXL kicks you off his forum, You are getting a life lesson. When someone invites you to swim in their pool, it's impolite to piss in it.

You are a guest in a community of people that gathers together to help others with the challanges, frustrations and sometimes joy that comes with working with modern technology. If you read through this forum you will see in addition to thrashing out the ills of computers, we debate politics, celebrate birthdays, welcome the birth of children and mourn the loss of cherished friends we have only met in this virtual coomunity. The amount of blood, sweat and tears IXL puts into this labor of love should be taken advantage of.

When you are guest in a real or virtual community it is bad form, as the Brittish say, to impune the community that welcomes you.

I hope you have learned a lesson as I suspect IXL will banish you as he should.

Good bye

Neato
One of the other truely wonderful freedoms of this country is a shop owners ability to refuse service to anyone for any reason, like being rude and belligerent. This is a computer help forum, not a soap box for you to shout oppression. Nobody is keeping you here and telling you you can't speak. If you want to voice your opinion, go somewhere more appropriate.

I don’t agree with any of you against "Unregistered" he basically voiced his opinion and you all jumped on him and started being confrontational towards him. I read through the thread and those are my thoughts, and I know someone will reply and try to get me banned just for agreeing with him. I think its disgusting what you guys do to someone for replying legitimately to a post. He didn’t attack anyone the rest of you began attacking him, which makes me afraid to even post this message. Its not a good way to run a post, banning anyone you want for hardly any reason. "Unregistered" wasn't looking for trouble but you sure all gave him some. If you weren’t part of the post then mind your own business.

Sigh... what a waste of time.

For the record I wasn't going to ban "Unregistered".. until he decided to post in support of himself using a sock puppet -- no patience for that nonsense.

And off the Bit Bucket it goes...
