OS/PC=WinME/NEC(PackardBell)OEM.

Thursday: (while using MS-Access97) the USB-MousePointer Froze. It is attached through a USB-Keyboard, which itself was accepting keystrokes. So:- Ctl+Alt+Del(twice) and on reboot got message "Installing new Hardware" but mouse still frozen. SafeMode reboot - still no change. Added a Serial Mouse, which was detected and functioned on reboot. System\Device Manager Settings; "Mouse" showed only the Serial Mouse; "USB Controller" showed an unknown Device (Icon with red line through it). Removed these and reinstalled USB-Controllers from "Smart Restore". After rebooting and reconfiguring-itself everything (including both mice) worked fine. Used the PC for the next 8 hrs with no problems (including restarts) having removed the serial Mouse.

Friday: on booting-up and with no windows open and having touched nothing the default DUN attempted a Dial-Up connection!! (no ZA prompt either), which I cancelled. Rebooted normally. Then (this time while using IE 5.5 offline to organise Favorites) the Mouse froze again. As before on rebooting "Installing new Hardware" etc. came up as before. So I just added the Serial Mouse again and rebooted and everything seems to be working properly and the Device Manager settings seem to be correct.

I have done an all-files NAV(fully up-to-date)scan, and run Defrag and ScanDisk. Does anyone know what is happening here?? I have been using this PC for 3months without problems so far. I would rather not do any Restores/Reformats - but if I have to then I have to.

Check MS's site on issues with ME and USB drivers; you may have to update them ( the USB drivers ).

Another thing to think about is your Power supply, it may not be adequate to handle the extra load of powering the keyboard and mouse-or it could just be a problem with the keyboard, have you tried the mouse in another USB port?

Try the mouse in it's on PC USB connection and see if that solves your problem.

iisbob - Thanks for your quick feedback

As suggested: I will check out M$ support and also try a new USB port if this recurs. I do like the lack of desk-clutter with my current setup and I will have to move the MiniTower up and onto my desk to do this. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

It sounds logical (now that you have pointed it out) but just to confirm that I have understood you. Both (a) the "mouse-freezing" and (b) the associated and misconfigured "new hardware detected" on reboot could have been caused be either a lack of adequate Power Supply or a bad connection at the mouse/keyboard USB-interface? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

I didnt like the PC attempting to dial-up "all on its own accord" - but this is probably a totally unrelated issue or else the pc is possessed. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Sounds more like a trojan or virus... but I'm not all that experienced so don't take my word for it. Just because you scanned for viruses doesnt always mean there's nothing there. Be cautious
