Trying to run it in and even in safe mode it will not complete. This PC is running ME. I scanned for spy/adware and it appears to be clean.
Any ideas what is going on?
Thanks!

When I want to run a thorough scandisk I have had better luck doing it in DOS. I have Windows 98SE but believe that ME should be the same:
When you are in Windows, reboot to DOS mode, and at the prompt type in scandisc.
Let us know how you make out.

Sorry about that----I just found out that ME doesnt have real DOS mode.
I would try this:
delete cookies, temp files, temp internet files, and run std scandisk in Safe mode,Restart. Then do thorough Scandisc in safe mode, Restart. Then do Defrag in safe mode,Restart.

Trapper has made a useful distinction between running scandisk with and without the accompanying surface scan.
If the normal scan is OK (the file system is OK) but if the surface scan is the problem then it is likely that there are bad sectors on the drive. In that case you should try running the HDD maker's diagnostic utility (download from their website see http://pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=29081 ) and consider backing up your data from that hdd. If the diagnostic shows the hdd to be good then formatting and reinstalling is probably the best way to go.
