I am attempting to set up a peer to peer network between two notebooks using Windows XP with identical on-board NIC cards, and a simple Cat5E crossover cable. I have tested a direct connection on the two systems with this crossover cable in the same room and found it to be working perfectly. The problem is I am moving my office into the basement, so when I ran this same cable through the floor and hooked it into a Keystone type mounted RJ45 female to RJ45 female connector, then used another short crossover cable to connect my PC, I get nothing. I pulled the original cable from the wall, unplugged it from the straight-thru connector, plugged it back in to my system and it works fine. Do I just need a short patch cable? What did I do wrong???? Any advice would be appreciated.

2 cross over cables created a patch cable
crossing it over once then crossing it back again :(

You need to use the cross over cable to the connector .
Then use the normal patch cable from there to your system
