XP download speed is slow!!

How can I increase my download speed on my USB connection on my system? I have a Toshiba PCX 1100U modem,Pionex 550 mhz,384 Ram,Xp operating system,50 gig system.I was not able to connect to the internet via my nic card for reason's "UNKNOWN"!!!!! I went to a cable test site and my download rate is just barely above that of a 56K connection!!!! And,when it comes to download speeds is there any DIFFERNECE between a Cat 5 connection verus a USB cable modem connection??? Thank You.

Now that you have the modem working.
You may want to try reconnecting the modem to the NIC.
It worked for one of my systems.
wouldn't connect when it was first installed using the nic.
Got connected using usb and updates RR software.

Then connected to nic with no hassles.
it's worth a try.
