View Full Version : Adaware- Important note about latest reference file

Some of you that use "about:blank" for your Home page in Internet Explorer (Which I do), may have noticed that the newest Adaware reference file, (in an attempt to prevent the recent start page Hijacker), will constantly show "Possible Browser Hijack attempt Object recognized"!

If you remove this entry, it will reset your homepage to the default MSN. (hehe...Sounds familiar huh?)

Anyway, I LIKE my Home page to be about:blank, so I've put it on my ignore list. (If you use the "legitimate" about:blank setting for you home page again, it will constantly find the entry and, of course, removing it will once again set your home page back to MSN.

From an Administrator at the Lavasoft Forums:
Just to clear this up, it is not a false positive and Aaron knew what the reactions would be. We were all notified of possible user reactions to this entry
It clearly states: Possible Browser Hijack attempt Object recognized!

In this case it is the only way to clear up the issue if it is indeed being caused by CWS.
If AboutBlank is your designated Home\Start Page then add it to your Ignore List.
If not, then remove it with the rest.

To add objects to your Ignore List:
Scan with Ad-aware,
Click "Next",
A list of detected items will be in the view window
(always do the 'Ignore' list items 1st)
Select any items from the list that you want to "Ignore",
Right click in the scan results window,
Select "Add selection to ignore-list",
Click "OK".
Note: I know you all were aware of what I just stated, however others that may read this topic may not.
That is the main reason I posted here

And a link to the thread below:

(Obviously, if you DON'T use "about:blank" as your home page, don't put the entry on your ignore list!)

I for one would grow tired of seeing Adaware constantly find the entry though. ;)

Hey Jabar, mahalo for the brief on that--I kinda figured that's all it could be (in mine) b/c there were no indicators in SB and nothing on HJT to indicate a hijack. It's also good that you posted this b/c then when someone posts about it we can just refer them to your thread.

(mahalo = thanks you in Hawaiian, and, no, but I wish I was)

Given that the about:blank is usually associated with the nastiest infections on the web, I suggest that you may want to leave it off of your ignore list and use some almost bare startpage or PCGuide....

Could always use about:mozilla. It loads fast, is very pretty and tells you what you should be using.:p:D

Yep,
and I like seeing a colorful internet page load confirming a live connection to welcome me to the Web.

Yep- I started this thread on 05-05-2004, back when that reference file first came out...(en4cer just happened to find it).

And while I realize about:blank can be a problem, I'm not worried about it, although there are many alternatives. One person I know has a locally stored page with HTML links to all of her favorites- along with a few Pics....pretty cool.

And then yes, there is always "about:mozilla" (Didn't I mention that here a while back?)

Anyway, you guys beat me to it...Hehe- Notice the very last post by "jabarnut" in my link above from the lavasoft Forums. (Hmmmm- wonder who that guy is?) The nerve of him stealing part of my name! :D

Sometimes I still use that, but it's a very bright Blue!
A little TOO bright first thing in the Morning!

Did I mention it's Red if you use it in Firebird? :p

Actually I think that was me. Plus in Firebird it also gives something to read on the red background.
And so at last the beast fell and the unbelievers rejoiced. But all was not lost, for from the ash rose a great bird. The bird gazed down upon the unbelievers and cast fire and thunder upon them. For the beast had been reborn with its strength renewed, and the followers of Mammon cowered in horror.

Thanks guys! Not that I need them but, you just cornered the market on about 40% of all M&M's! Greens, yellows and browns are about all thats left....and I hate the green ones!

Please post a suitable address for the rest of us that aren't lucky enough to have our own color, to send yours to! (C.O.D. of course!)

Well, as long as we're on the subject of "about:blank" again.

As I pointed out, this thread is a couple of weeks old now....they must have become so tired of hearing about this over at the Lavasoft Forums though, they finally posted a "sticky" on the subject!
