I recently purchased the Linksys WPC54G card and WRT54G router. The router is working fine on my desktop machine and the laptop card's utility shows that it is connected with full signal strength. The problem is I cannot get access to the internet---I don't know if it is an Internet Explorer setting or on the laptop itself. I'm running Windows ME. I tried Linksys tech support but they give new meaning to the term useless. Any ideas toward a resolution would be helpful, thanks.

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.

Do you know if both devices are using the same SSID?

Are you using DHCP or setting the IP manually?

Long shot but I came across one user who had problems unless the WPC54G card was set to run in 'B' mode. Something to check as a last resort I suspect.

Thanks for the reply...yes, both devices are using the same SSID. I have it set to obtain an IP address automatically. I can try setting it to 'B' mode---not sure why that would necessarily be an issue, but at this point...

Again, the card has a clear signal to the router...it's just getting the internet explorer to see the connection that is causing problems.

You need to go into Ie.

Choose tools-->Internet Options-->Connections---> Setup. Follow the wizzard and set it to connect by LAN.

Probably the easiest way to use wireless access points/routers/cards is to set things up using static IP addresses.

Find out the default IP address of the Router's lan port (usually something like 192.168.1.1) and set your other machines accordingly (if you're not sure about this sort of setup, just post back and we'll go through it) you .

One of the most overlooked things here is to set the default gateway - this is the router, and unless you set your laptop to use the router as a default gateway, there's no way you'll access the internet. Again, you'll need the IP address of your router's lan interface.

Let's try that then...not sure how to set it up. My router is currently set to the default IP of 192.168.1.1

Make sure that your router is assigning a different IP. I had a problem where my IP was assigned and it got "stuck", so it didn't let me have internet. I think if you say that it can have a differnt lease time, that might solve the problem.

I think Deddard is correct:

On your laptop, you need to set the gateway to the IP address of the router, i.e. 192.168.1.1.

You do this by right clicking on My Network Places, going to properties, then setting the properties of the TCP/IP protocol under the gateway tab. Type the IP address and then click on Add.

By the way, my Linksys router has a default IP address of 192.168.0.1 so make sure yours is correct.

Typing the IP address of your router in Internet Explorer should take you to the router's configuration screen.
