Dowloaded the recovery console from the cd rom to the hard drive , when booting up you get choice XP OR recovery console which asks for administrator password , I am the sole user of the pc & my user account is set to the default setting for one user which is administrator , so why when I try to enter Recovery console on startup do I get the message wrong password .Dont need recovery at the moment but would be hopeless in the event a needed repair.

You may be the only apparent administrator but there is always another account actually called Administrator. If you never renamed this specific system account or specified a password for it then just pressing enter (in other words no password) at the command prompt in the recovery console should work just fine.

Yes- As Paul mentioned, there always seems to be a lot of confusion about this. (Including myself back in my early days with XP)

The original "Administrator" that is set-up by default when you first install XP, is thereafter "hidden" for the most part. Unless you boot into safe mode, use Tweakui, (or a few other things as you found out).

I have since run into people that used a particular password for the default Administrator when first installing XP, and then when setting up an account for a user with "Administrator privileges" later on, used a different password. (Thinking it was the same "account").

If you didn't use a password when first installing XP, then Paul's suggestion should work just fine.
Otherwise, you may have to think really hard...It's possible you used a different password when you first installed the OS then the one you are accustomed to. (Crazy I know, but I've seen it first hand).

One other thing worth mentioning IANUK-

It might be a very good idea to access the System account named "Administrator" and password protect it!
I think Blackviper (http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/winxp.htm) put it best:Crackers need 2 things to access your PC:
1) A user name
2) A password
If you do not password your Administrator account, 100% of their work is done! ;)
