modem keeps disconnecting

Just built a new system and the dial-up modem I put in will dial the isp and connect but then at anytime will disconnect (as far as I can tell) on its own. It could be anywhere from a couple of minutes to 10 minutes. I've tried adjust some of the different settings for the modem in windows but it still does the disconnect thing.

Win XP Pro
Intel P4 2.8
Gigabyte M/B 875P chip
modem: Intel HaM fax/data/voice 56k v.90 XP would not load the driver that came with the modem. found an update on the internet but it says v.92

v.92 modems are different from v.90 modems you are using drivers for a different modem.
