View Full Version : bridge.dll
Can anyone tell me how bridge.dll affects Windows? I have a virus in that file and apparently it cannot be cleaned and I can't delete it. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thx, keep smiling.

You have at least one problem with malware (virus, spyware, hijacker and so on...). Please download and run Spybot and AdAware. In Spybot fix items checked in RED... In AdAware fix whatever it indicates is bad... Also, it is a good idea to run an online virus scan, there are links to 2 of them at the bottom of my post. Then you need to run HijackThis and post a log to clean out whatever is left.
To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as C:\Documents or one you create like C:\HJT. Close all programs you have opened and make sure that all programs are enabled if you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log. When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open your browser and come here to Paste the log. Do not make any changes until it is checked since most items are either benign or essential to the computer.

Bridge.DLL is defintely spyware. Do as Budfred suggests.
Thanks everyone,
I'm working on it. I've removed the entries from the registry. I've scanned for viruses using symantec, ran kill_cih (result-virus not found in memory). I'm about to rescan for viruses with symantec. I'll review your informative posts again to ensure I haven't missed anything and hope that life returns to normal.
I really appreciate your help... and your welcome to the forums ;) .
Keep smiling,

Dear BJS:
Please follow the instructions Budfred gave you and the ones I posted here (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29717)
You are not as safe as you think....
My apologies for being so "needy" here. :)
I've tried to download spybot. It's a small file so it should be quick (I have a cable connection). It seems to have downloaded. Since it did not indicate to me where it downloaded to, I searched and found it in "...Temporary Internet Files" called "Spybot13[1].exe. That's the only entry. When I double click this to execute, I get an error message: "...Spybot13[1].exe is not a valid Win32 application."
I'm running Windows 98SE (I know, time to upgrade  ) The min requirements show that Windows 98 is acceptable. Any thoughts?

I would download to the desktop, that would let you close the browser, doubleclick, and install.
It works fine with 98.

You may have the nastiest bug around these days... As has been suggested several times, download and install HijackThis.... If you lose it and can't install it, that means you are in for a major hassle, but we are working on an easy fix. If you can download and install it, do so and post the log here for us to use to help find and fix whatever else you have in there....
My apologies for the additional thread, budfred. I thought I was still in the main one.
I just downloaded and ran HijackThis. Here is the log it generated.

The worst thing here is CWS, one of the nastier infections, but hopefully one that comes out cleanly... Please download and run CWShredder from my links. It needs to be run with your browser closed. Choose to FIX and let it fix what it finds, then reboot and post a new HJT log back here....
'K, Here's the new log. It seemed to have cleaned the CWS with no difficulty. (What a smart little program ;) ) I'll be pressing on (going over previous posts) to see what other suggestions I need to follow.

There is one thing here that is bad and a few that I am not sure about. I will start with the bad ones. Please close all open windows and browsers, run HJT and Scan, mark/fix:
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [stcinstaller] c:\installer\id53.exe
If you don't recognize these and know they are safe, it would probably be a good idea to fix them. Some of their names are very similar to that of some known malware:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = http://www.internet-search.info/searchbar
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.internet-search.info/searchbar
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.internet-search.info/searchbar
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PlaxoUpdate] C:\WINDOWS\Plaxo\1.4.2.25\InstallStub.exe -a
Some of the hits on this site look suspicious. You may want to consider fixing these and avoiding that site unless you can confirm it is safe...

There are a couple of other things that look a bit suspicious, but let's see how it goes with whatever you decide to do with these.
You also need to update IE. I see that you are using Netscape or Mozilla, but IE still makes you vulnerable if you don't update it. In particular, you are susceptible to the CHM worm....
Please reboot and post a fresh log to see if things are clean. Say how things are going as well...

classicsoftware,
I am glad you were working on it too, you saw the 2nd stcinstaller that I missed...
Did you find anything bad about that Plaxo?? I didn't, but if you did it may be worthwhile to fix it...
From what I could tell, those R1 items may actually be legit, even though they look like several bits of malware...
Also, I didn't pick up on that O16 being a problem, but even if it isn't, it won't hurt fix it since it will be restored if bjs visits that site again....
This team effort seems to work well....:D :D

classicsoftware,
Those links are not really validation that it is spyware and each seems to contain conflicting opinions. It seems to be a legit program that has problems at times, so it would be an optional fix and is probably not the problem in this case.... so it is up to you what you decide to do with it bjs....

Here is the Original article (http://forum.plaxo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=919&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&vc=1).
Right off their own site. Any program that install something else withour being upfront about it. A program the mines all of your e-maill addresses is ____ware of the highest order.
Sorry guys, I got tied up in work (don't you know) and now I'm way behind in following my posts here. I "fixed" all the entries suggested from both budfred and classicsoftware. (Yes, teamwork is a wonderful thing!) :)
I did restart in DOS to delete those 2 entries, however my delete command did not work. So I removed Plaxo from the add/remove programs and did a "find" for the id53, found 2 items there (both .exe files) and deleted them both.
The following is the "Newest" log file from HJT. I haven't updated IE yet. Have to run off to work. But I should be able to do that after my appointments this afternoon.

Your log looks clean. The question remains. How is your system running? Still getting the error messages?
Run Windows update ASAP

classicsoftware,
I agree that is a valid optional fix, but those posts are not sufficient to say that it is spyware. From what I can tell about the program, it tells you exactly what it is going to do and it was designed to do what people complained about... If someone likes it and wants to keep it, it is valid to do so and that makes it optional...
bjs,
You log does indeed look clean... This is a good time to tighten up security... here is an article to read that can tell you more about how to do that.....
http://www.computercops.biz/postlite7736-.html
Hi again. I ran the Windows updates (there were 15 of them... oops, guess I hit that "remind me later" button a few times too many. :D ) This did include an IE update. Does that mean that I do NOT have to download additional updates for IE?
I also read that article you suggested Budfred, and downloaded and ran both SpywareBlaster and Spyware Guard... Oh... and Cookiejar too. Also ran the recommended tests... not perfect results, but pretty darned good.
In answer to your question ClassicSoftware, my system is running about 500 times faster with no popups, no highjacking, and much fewer spam emails. Also my system used to freeze every few seconds for a second or two. It isn't doing that anymore either. All in all I have to say that you guys are geniuses!!! :D It's okay... take a bow! Thanks again for all your help.
I'm guessing now I should really consider a firewall like zone alarm. My biggest concern is that I've heard that if it's not configured properly you could end up not being able to receive web pages. Is that something I need to worry about?
Keep smiling,
BJS

With Zone-Alarm, any program that attempts to access the internet will be interecpted by ZA. ZA will ask you if you want to allow a certain program to access the internet. Before you get worried that you will clicking ok every 30 seconds, ZA allows you to remember your settings for a particular program. So after the first time ZA asks about internet Explorer or Netscape will be the last.
Easy to use and configure.
If you have broadband, you should also have a router or a hardware firewall to make your system invisible to outsiders.
And one more thing, You're welcome. It's the simple thanks at the end of a solved problem that makes doing this worthwhile......

Hi all, found this thread through a Google search for SDHelper.dll
I wasn't sure if this was a destructive file/process or something legit. I'm a geek-in-training so any help would be appreciated. My situation is this... I keep getting smacked with Search.x. CWShredder does a wonderful job of removing this (and I've also hand edited the registry as little as well). I've installed all the latest and greatest from Microsoft and the Service Packs and Critical items etc. I'm running Windows XP Home, ZoneAlarm and am behind a D-Link DI-604 router on a cable connection.
I only go to sites that I've been using for a long time (since my last computer) and every once in a while Search.x still pops up. Removing it isn't a problem anymore (that 1st time figuring it out was such a pain) but I'd like to prevent it in the future. I was wondering if you all would be so kind to look over my reg stuff from Hijack This and please let me know if I've missed any malware components? Thanks in advance for any help on this.

If you looked through the posts on this thread at all you would have seen that you need to start you own thread to post a HJT log and you need to do that in the Applications and Security forum....
