P-P connection for playing games

i need to connect my pc to my friend's for the sole purpose of gaming.
>> What are the hardware requirements?
>> What are the protocols i have to install?
>> Are there any compatablitiy issues i need to consider ? (regarding the two PCs' hardware or their OSs)

It should just require a network card in each machine.

Once it is installed you will just need to configure all machines with IP addresses in the same network range.
