Icons are simply shortcuts. Right click an icon and click Delete, the icon is gone. The program is still there, but you have to run it by using a shortcut in another location or by using the run box in the Start Menu.
Before you delete an icon, make sure you have a link to it in the start menu so you can still get to it when needed. I keep very few icons on my desktop, they are small gif picture files, and each one must be redrawn by the CPU and video card 60-72 times per second, depending on refresh rate, which can affect performance if you have a slow machine or a lot of icons. I always make sure I have another shortcut available in the start menu before I delete an icon from the desktop...
Do not delete the My Computer icon! It can be very useful...I like to keep the IE icon and Recycle Bin too, actually I don't think Recycle Bin can be deleted very easily. I usually keep 6 or 8 others, depending on what I need to use a lot.

simply right click on any empty spot on your desktop>> left click "Active Desktop >> view as a webpage"
Icons will still be there, but not visable.

Oh dear, never thought of "each one must be redrawn by the CPU and video card 60-72 times per second, depending on refresh rate, which can affect performance if you have a slow machine or a lot of icons." I have bunches of icons to everything I use...but on a "plain green" wallpaper if that helps. Raises a related question though. When one is using a program, underneath is always the Desktop running? Or not? I generally don't maximize most program screens..just a preference on my part, but can see Desktop underneath/around program screen. Does that use more resources, or the same?
