Hi
My freind has just given there computer to fix.
It was really slowing down on them.I did a full system scan with norton and discovered 6 adware programs in there i tried to delete them but was unable to.
I have tried system restore but it will not let me roll back the months or days at all,it just dosen't respond.
So i backed up all of the important data and attempted system recovery.
By the way it has windows xp and is a compaq.
With this system you have to make seven recovery disks which i did.
I entered into system recovery before the system loaded windows,it told me it was activating recovery. Then all of a sudden it quits to a blue screen saying fatal system error with a code coooo21a.
I haven't got a clue as what to do now.
Please if someone has any suggestions i would appreciate the input.
All the best wroding.

Are you able to reboot the computer?? If you can, download and run Spybot and AdAware. Make sure you update them before running them... Then get a HijackThis log and post it here... To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as C:\Documents or one you create like C:\HJT. Close all programs you have opened and make sure that all programs are enabled if you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log. When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open your browser and come here to Paste the log. Do not make any changes until it is checked since most items are either benign or essential to the computer.

You can get the programs from my links...

If you can't boot, please post as much detail about what you can do as possible... system specs would be helpful as well...

The type of error you indicate indicates a serious security problem with XP---a user-mode subsystem, such as Winlogon or the Client Server Runtime Sybsystem(Csrss.exe)is compromised. The most common cause of the problem is a third party program and the solution would be to remove the program. This error can also occur if a backup set has been partially restored , causing a mismatch in system files, or if system permissions have been incorrectly modified so that the System account no longer has permission to access system files and folders.

The above was taken from "Microsoft Windows XP, Inside Out".

Wroding---

Unfortunately can't suggest anything as I'm not all that experienced yet. Perhaps a repair/install might work though.

Budfred: Would it help him at all to disable his system restore now, just disable it, so that whatever can be dislodged doesn't hide in there or jump out and start trouble all over again while he is attempting to fix it?

Would he get any added benefit by running SpWrBlaster and Adaware from Safe Mode (if he get INTO Safe Mode?)

WRODING: do NOT do this until you hear from Budfred.

What kind of problem are you having downloading HijackThis... If it is that you can't download from the main site on my link, try an alternate link, LurkHere usually works....

SpywareBlaster is for prevention, so it won't help in this situation...

AdAware and Spybot would both be good to run... in Safe mode or Normal mode either one...

It isn't necessary to do anything with System Restore. If something is lurking there, it can't become active unless you use a Restore Point... It would probably be a good idea to reset it eventually, but you would lose all Restore Points then. It can be worthwhile to use a Restore Point if there is one that predates the problem, but unfortunately Windoze goes through each one to get there and it is likely to crash if the bad stuff is in an earlier one... You can't selectively remove any as far as I know....

Wait for the experts to comment, FYI the Kaazaa is a problem, your friends have to learn to use something that does not endanger all of us with it's dreck. WinMx is a cleaner alternative.

Budfred

Kazaa is a filth farm that loads crapware on your machine and keeps loading it as you use it.... MyWebSearch is not much better.... I strongly recommend you remove them both. It may be worthwhile to use KazaaBegone to make sure you get rid of it all, but start in Add/Remove Programs.... This needs to go to since it is part of Kazaa:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe
C:\program files\altnet\points manager\points manager.exe

Okay, you do have some problems here... To start, please extract HijackThis to a permanent folder such as C:\Documents or one you create like C:\HJT. You are running it from a temp folder which means we may not be able to restore any changes made...

Then close all open windows and browsers, run HJT and mark/fix. I will include the Kazaa and MyWebSearch items, exclude them if you want to keep them for some reason (not a good idea). You might want to print this out to make sure you get it all:

Then reboot into Safe Mode, find and remove these. Use Add/Remove Programs if the program is there, but simply delete the file or folder if it isn't. You will probably need to set WinXP to show all hidden files to do this:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe
C:\program files\altnet\points manager\points manager.exe
C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe (very nasty folder)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\soundtask.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\Altnet\DOWNLO~1\asm.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe
C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe (very nasty folder)
C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WSup.exe (very nasty folder)

Once you complete these fixes, please reboot and run HJT again. Post the new log and explain any continued problems you are having. It is likely that there will be more to clean up....

Hi
Sorry for the long delay getting back but iv'e been away.
I got your last reply and i'm a little unsure of what exactly to do.
Are you asking me to delete all the files you listed.
I'm sorry if it sounds like a stupid question, but because iv'e been away from this problem for a while i feel a little unsure.
I really appreciate all your help.
All the best john.

I am suggesting that you close all open windows and browsers, open HJT and put a check next to each of the items I listed above to fix with HJT and then let it fix those items... You don't delete them, you let HJT fix them...

After you do that, you need to remove the other files/folders I listed under the HJT fixes... This is done with Add/Remove Programs if possible or just delete if you can't remove...

After you do these things, reboot and post a fresh log so we can see what else needs to be cleaned up...

If you don't understand all of the directions, do as much as you can and post back...

WinTools...

Yes, get rid of it QUICK.

Before you can do anything with it, you have to disable it in services. go to Start\Run and type services.msc. Scroll down the list and look for "Win Tools for IE". (I think that's the full name listed) Click Properties then Disabled in the drop-down box. That stops it from running next boot, until then you can't do anything with it because Windows sees the files as in use. You can't even shut down the processes in Task Manager, they come back instantly. Black Viper (http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm) has a lot more information about XP Services.

Then remove it from Add/Remove Programs, if there, then delete the files Budfred listed. It might also be a good idea to check the registry for Run instances, I can't remember if they stick around or not.

HKEY_Local Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run is the registry location to check.
Run Services and Run Once also.

It's quite a nasty critter, and difficult to remove, I had to remove it 3 times last weekend from a customer's machine, it kept coming back until I suppose I uninstalled the program that put it there, or deleted the main executable that kept running at boot. Not sure, but it was definitely a nuisance to remove.

And yes, disable System Restore until all of this is cleaned out. You don't want any existing restore points now anyway, that will bring all this crud back. Disable System Restore is the very first thing I always do for that reason. If I see virus or spyware, System Restore is GONE. If you forget, you WILL regret it...so turn it off to be safe.

Well I am by no means an expert but I see a few things that could be causing some problems.

Kazaa is still installed and running:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART
C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe

You also still have WinTools:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsB.dll

You are also running a lot of processes on startup that are not necessary:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mmtask.exe
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ymsgr_tray.exe

All of these can be stopped from running, and opened as needed. This will help the computer to run a bit better. I also see many processes running from Symantec (Norton programs) which are big resource hogs, but that would be up to you if they are necessary or not. Better firewalls and AV can be had for free, which will be easier on resources.

wroding,

It looks like you missed several things in the fixes I suggested... Please print out the whole set of fixes and go to Safe Mode and fix them again, check them off on the printed sheet as you mark them on HJT and then fix when all are done... Run a fresh scan and check them again... Reboot and post a fresh log... You can fix the optionals that Erik noted if you want, but I would wait until we clearly have cleaned up the bad stuff first...

Unless I'm mistaken it also looks as if you still have Hijack This in a Temporary folder. It needs to be in a separate folder of its own, so your backups will be there and easily located in case anything must be replaced later.

Create a Hijack This folder on C drive (in windows explorer or My Computer) then copy and paste the hijack this exe file to that folder and run it from there.

Follow Budfred's earlier suggestions, remove all he listed in his earlier post, shut down Win Tools in Services and remove it, then scan with HJT again and we'll take care of the lesser troublesome problems. Win Tools is the worst of it, that one can cause real headaches. KaZaA is most likely where it came from. In fact I'd bet on it.

An observation too...The computer I cleaned out last weekend had WinTools, and the same or similar

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www. websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=61

lines. I'm wondering if websearch is closely related or what? Every Wintools HJT log I've seen in a quick ride on Google has had the same websearch lines, right along with WinTools. Coincidence? Or is this no accident?

Hi Budfred
I have posted the results of my latest scan.
The computer seems to run faster but still slow at booting up.Also sometimes it will not boot down.

Your log looks clean... You can remove some of the optional stuff to see if that helps, you have a lot of stuff running and that takes a long time to bootup... Here is an example of something that you might be better off without:

C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe

Also, if you haven't already run an online virus scan, spyware scans and a trojan scan, it would be worthwhile to do so and see if there is anything messing things up that don't show in HJT...

Here is my prevention speech to keep clean and protect your system....

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. You need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....
