computer shutting down

I have a Toshiba laptop running windows XP. Everytime I try to run my Mcafee virus scan my computer shuts down before the scan is completed. It doesn`t go on standby it completely shuts off. Any ideas why?

Some recent viruses/worms block access to and scans for security programs when they can. I would try Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/averttools.asp) downloaded on a clean PC, write protect the disk, then scan your computer in SAFE mode from the floppy.
You could also have Netsky or Sasser or other problems if your Windows Update patches are not up to current levels.
