View Full Version : Won't Continue to Display Pages!

After a Format and reinstall of Win98, my computer will not continue to display pages off the internet after about three pages. I can download for hours; talk on messenger (even use the webcam.....but sending a picture shuts IE down) as long as I want - it just will not continue to display pages (says server can not be found or disconnects). I have a companion computer that runs the same OS and have swapped the modems with no change to that specific computer. They use the same cable and service. I have format and reinstalled three times and same problem. IE4, IE5 and IE6 all continue to show the same problem - the service is dialup. Any thoughts on what is going on?

Download nestcape or opera and see if the problem exists with a different browser. If it does we can start looking at the computer. If it doesn't, we can start looking at tweaking IE.

I just downloaded Netscape (7.0) and it works fine. If I go back to IE it works like crap.....

Now we know we have a problem with IE not with your computer or the internet connection. Have you tried to repair IE or download the latest updates?

I did the updates before and still had problems (the full IE6 service pack). This changed the Explorer icons but still gave no service to the internet. Last time I tried - it did not connect and asked if I wanted to change the settings (proxy?); I didn't want to possibly bugger up Netscape, so I did not go any farther.....

What kind of connection do you have? DSL/Cable/Dialup?

Dial-up, 56K modem.

On the advice of a computer repair guy in my neck of the woods..... I have solved my problem. He suggested that I try one of the older 56k modems because they were better and more compatible with a "finicky" system. Whatever.....I tried it with an old 3com/usr modem and after downloading the drivers.....Success!!!!!
