 I just recently went to a website for my wife and in this site, there was a secondary link that I needed to open to download some information. This secondary site required adobe reader to access the info. Now, a long time ago, I could open pdf files with no problem using adobe 4.0. just within the last month, I upgraded to the lates version of the reader. When I tried to access the pdf file, my computer locked up and adobe 6.0 would not work. the computer wasn't locked up but the ie and other programs locked up associated with the site that required pdf data. How can I correct this? I uninstalled the new version and redownloaded and reinstalled it but still the same problem. My resources indicated that I had at least 75% free. I am using Windows 98se and I have lots of storage space. Someone told me that it is a software conflict but I am not sure on this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Perhaps a corrupt file or fragged file in 4.0 ? Is it possible for you to (add/remove) remove 4.0 completely, then download 6.0 by itself? I just checked and I have 6.0.1 in add/remove. I'm Win Me but you should be able to do that also. 6.0 should be making all the adjustments it need to fit in on top of 4.0. If it were me, I'd dump 4.0, and make sure to do a file search to get all the stragglers out also, and dnld 6.0 by itself. And when it is installed, just for luck, shut down for two full minutes.

You have all your Windows/IE updates in place right? Two more just came through tonight for OE 6 SP1. Sometimes the OE updates affect things in IE. Might not hurt to take care of that first, and make sure you're all up to date on the essentials.

Defragged lately? IE working ok?

Often when I access a pdf file online my browser window appears to be locked while the file is loading. Mouse moves, I can open other programs, etc., but the browser is totally unresponsive until the pdf file has totally loaded. With big files this can take awhile, but once the loading is complete the browser "unfreezes". This happens to me more often with IE than with Mozilla.

Have you tried right-clicking the link to the pdf file on the website and choosing to Save As or Save Link To Disk? Doing that should open a save dialog box with the file name and pdf extension if that site allows you to download the document. Save it to your hard drive and open it from there.

Thanks for your response Donn. Here is another challenge for you. In response to your suggestions, here is what I did previously. When I first tried to open the pdf file and ran in to the problem, I did go back and unstalled all files pertaining to 4.0, downloaded the latest version, still same problems, unstalled latest version, reinstalled newest version, also, I have done a scandisk as well as disk defrag thinking that this would fix the problem but it did not.I checked to make sure that I have the latest version of IE (I do). Just as of this morning, I tried to open the site (www.-----/---/----.pdf and a new window popped up and then it froze up again. None of my Icons worked on the tool bar. The only thing that worked was the shutdown option and then when I told it to shutdown, I got the blue screen saying that the system was busy and had to do a cntl-alt-del to shut down. Any web site I get that ends in pdf causes the system to lock up and not open, thus freezing at this point.

Thanks for your response Kimbo. I tried this and this seems to work, so, I guess that this is what I will do from this point on.

Donn, thank you for your help. Another logger (Kimbo) gave me a suggestion to try and it seemed to work. I guess that this is what I will be doing from here on out. Once again, thanks one and all.
