Hello, i am having problems accessing Windows Update, I have Windows 98 Scond Edition, my pc used to be part of a network and has an ethernet card still installed!

When I go to windows update I get an error message "Acess Denied"
Network policy settings prevent you from using windows update to download and install updates on your computer"

I checked out a previous post on this, the only diference being the other user was runing XP, the advice given was as follows,

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cu
rrentVersion\Policies\WindowsUpdate

You should see a key called "DisableWindowsUpdateAccess".You need to change the value of this key to a zero "0" or rightclick and select delete to allow your PC access to the site.

Now navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cu
rrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

You should see a key called "NoWindowsUpdate".You need tochange the value of this key to a zero "0" or right click and select delete to allow your PC access to the site.

This didnt work for me as, in the policies section there was no "Windows Update"

and in the "Explorer" section there was no key called "No windows update"

i really need to update this old pc, any help on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Rojer

Rojer,
Until someone comes along with the proper fix, try going to Windows Catalog, the updates are there for download (doubleclick on the file after download).

You can also see what updates are needed by downloading Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) (thank Jabarnutcase), and it should show you what updates are installed/missing.
