Hi Guy's im new here. But I know the drill.

Comp Specs:
HP - 4535 (http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph05058.html) (click for specs...)

I upgraded to:
256 mb RAM
CD-RW/ROM - (hp)

OS:
Win98 SE

Problem:

I have always had low resources for as long as I can remeber knowing enough to check it. But as of late it has been getting lower and lower...and droping at differen times. Then going back up. I recental re-formated (for the 16 time). And re-installed Win98 SE. Currently I have nothing running but ICQ and this browser that I am useing to post. But my comp is at 60% free. Now I know that ICQ takes a lot. But come'on, My cousins comp has 256mgs. And had 4 of the top line graphic programs open And did not go under 80%. It is registering the 256 Meg's on the performace tab. Also I have been getting alot of other errors lately. More and more. Everything from kernal32, GDI, Windows is UNSTABLE, MSVGER32 <<--(sp). So I am begginng to thing it is not the ram chip itself but my mother board going out. I have ran the latest Norton's AV Check. And have installed Nortons Systemworks to check for currupted files....(only real errors were shortcuts). I also keep this comp defraged(which it gets fragmented way to much for my likeing.....). Any sugesstions. Please help.

ALso if thier is anytihng else you would like to know. Or sometihng I left out just post back and i'll find out...

Thanx Guys

First thing is we need to know what's running in the background. Use the 3 finger salute, [Ctrl] [Alt] [Del] ONCE and see what's listed. HP runs a lot of garbage, most of it can be shut off. Then run msconfig and you can usually shut off everything in the start up page but Task Monitor, Systray, Explorer and Power Profile. Leave your antivirus too, and ZA.

Here (http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck.htm) is a list of programs that show up in msconfig, and which ones are safe to shut down.

IF its a hp i would call tech support , they would be the best suited for this problem. I would say that one of your hardware devices is failing. Might be the harddrive, or motherboard, i would call for a replacemen
When you reloading the os, did you load the chipset drivers back on to the harddrive. Of course who knows what kind of motherboard that hp has in it though, so call hp, or wait for the 5 day email thing.
