I'm working on an HP Pavilion that's out of warranty. I want to replace the Win Me with XP, but there is Adaptec burning software that the owners don't have any installation CDs for. I don't want to lose the program or end up having to buy it.
Is there a way around this?

Unless you know all the files that are necessary, and can copy them to the right place (unlikely!) then I don't see how it can be done - a simple upgrade may keep some of the files in place, but I doubt it will work properly. The one thing that may give your customer a bit of cheer is that XP comes with it's own burning software. You can also get CDBurner XPPro for nothing - this is a great little burning utiity which can handle everything including ISO images.
THe other thign (which won't please your customer, but may mitigate things a bit) is that the burning software that works with Me is not guaranteed to work with XP anyway - I've got a few copies of Nero around that worked fine on 98, but XP wouldn't sniff at them.

Thanks!
First.
Win XP Includes EZCD (Adaptec/Roxio cd bruner Lite)
If you Use the Win XP upgrade cd it will allow you to keep all your old software.
Including the old version of your Burner.
You'll just have to download andinstall the patch from Roxio for it.
