I have just installed Broadband using DSL Modem w/ Telephone connection.
I already have 3 Computers linked on a network using Realtek network cards , cross over cables and Hub. This setup is working fine for File and Printer sharing, Head to Head gaming etc. What I want though is to enable 1 of the other computers to share the internet connection. Spoke to an AOL Technician who basically said I needed a 'Router'. I am afraid I did not get much more info than that due to the Advisor having a really dreadful Stutter. Just looked on ARIA.CO.UK and there are Routers which already contain a modem. What else do I actually need to achieve my aims? I really would appreciate a 'Step by Step' answer because I am a total novice in the area of Internet access sharing Networks!
Many Thanks

What type/brand/model of DSL modem do you have, internal or external?
Did you have to install any software to be able to connect?
Are you sure you're using crossover cables with the hub and not patch cables?

If it's an external modem, then getting a multi-port router like a Linksys such as THIS ONE (http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=34&scid=29&prid=561) , you can replace your hub and just plug the modem into the router, and the PC's into the other side of the router..

If you are using a intermal modem for the dsl connection.
Then you will have to setup ICS (Internet connection sharing)

The One included with windows is a Bit of a pain to get working.
There are after market ICS programs out there
You should find a free/trial/shareware version and test it to see if it is going to work for you.

Yea, most likely you need a router. If you have an external modem you can connect the modem to the router, if you buy a router with multiple ports you can disconnect the hub and connect the cables directly to the router. The router will come with detailed instructions on how to set up your network. If you set your computers to use DHCP, where they look for their networks addresses automatically, then the set up is really simple.
Get a router that does DHCP and NAT and that also has a built in firewall. Once you get more savvy you can delve into setting up a good solid hardware firewall. Then you can get rid of the software firewall running on each machine, if you want. The NAT alone is a huge saftey feature.

If you have any questions look here for some good info.
http://www.duxcw.com/faq/ics/ and the networking FAQ

The more homework you do, the smarter your choices of hardware will be. Remember, when you set up the network any software firewalls you have may cause problems, it would be smart to disable them before you start connecting up all the wires and get started. If you want to go wireless now is the time to think about that.

Many thanks to all who have taken the trouble to respond to my question.
I actually have a Globespan usb ADSL/LAN external modem (AOL Standard issue). Anyway, I think I now have a clearer idea about what I need to purchase. Many thanks again!
