This is one of the worst HJT logs I have ever seen. Is there something he doesn't have????

Hehe...that's a bit of work. Those host files mean that when he tries to go to any of the web sites on the right, he will be redirected to the addy on the left. In this case his own computer. Stops him from going to any of the help sites to get cleaned up.

Here's what I see right off:

O3 - Toolbar: iSearch Toolbar - {1C78AB3F-A857-482e-80C0-3A1E5238A565} C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IncrediMail] C:\PROGRA~1\INCRED~1\bin\IncMail.exe /c

Thanks for help.

How do I take care of the hosts file, edit, or just delete the whole file?

This is the worst mess I have ever seen....

Steve
05-24-2004, 11:07 PM
Fix them with HJT.

pave_spectre
05-24-2004, 11:12 PM
And then set the hosts file properties to Read-Only.

R3 - URLSearchHook: iSearch Toolbar - {1C78AB3F-A857-482e-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll

Isn't this a Shredder variant? Isn't "URL SearchHook" a hijacker?

I'm glad to see that PCGuide is not on that list yet.

Knock on wood.

Although, I do see a lot of other sites I go to often on the list.

Classic, that is definitly a mess.

I am new at this but, I know all the files with the random 8 character names are some kind of infection. I just can't remember which one they are right now. To tired to do the research right now. Sorry.:(

Good luck

CS, I'm sure you'll keep your own advice. Some or most of that should be gone after he runs Adaware and Spybot and runs a couple of virus scans.

;)

EDIT: ...and Incredimail might be OK. A lot of people seen to like it.

Budfred
05-24-2004, 11:56 PM
That is a goodly assortment, but there are several things that are not currently evident. I don't see a clear CWS, although the about:blank items may turn out to be. I also don't see Peper, Look2Me, Hacker Defender or a number of other really nasty things. This is mostly stuff that should clean up pretty well. In addition to the fixes noted by Steve, I would go with spyware scans then a new log after.... you know the drill......;)

Steve, thanks for the input. Since he cant get to download anything, I'll just have him fix with HJT first so he can download the other stuff.

Thanks again....

Like I said, this is as bad as I've seen on one computer.

classicsoftware

Budfred, thanks for the look. It may not be the baddest of the bad, I've seen alot of logs and I haven't seen one that need as many fixes.... It's also the furst time I've seen the goodguys blocked by the hosts file, they are getting more clever by the day.....

Budfred

Wait until you see Hacker Defender... It hides HJT, CWShredder and Spybot from you and it is hell to remove. Some people are saying that the only way to be sure you have really killed it is to wipe the drive and start over....

I am going to get a link for a substitute for the HOSTS file that will protect against attacks, you can replace the usual HOSTS file with it. I will post it in a bit....

If you have a fresh log by then, I will take a look at that too... Good luck with that mess...:D

Hi CS,

I'm not sure if that entry can open the system folder. There is very little info that I can find on it. It seems to be associated with two files.

Search.vbs is a hijacker.

VS.VSN is part of eSafe antivirus "SmartScan" - alerts the user if files have been changed/added.

Maybe you can check to see if either file is on the computer.

You still have Netster on there:
